Vaughn Bailey
Portland, Ind., Mayor Vaughn L. Bailey, 69, of 220 W. Second St., Portland, died Monday morning at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, Ind., following a brief illness.
Mr. Bailey, born in Portland, had served as mayor since January 1992. A member of the Portland American Legion Post 211, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II.
He retired in 1986 from Muncie newspapers where he worked for 37 years in the press room He was also a pastor of several area churches.
Mr. Bailey graduated, from Portland High School and attended Slippery Rock State Teachers College in Pennsylvania and Ball State University, Muncie.
Surviving are his wife, Letha; two sons, Thomas V. and George A., both of Portland; three daughters, Nancy Jo Laux of Berne, Ind., and Pamela Swell and Jodee Borgerding, both of Portland; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sarah Hutson of Portland.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. (Indiana time) Friday at Faith Baptist Church, Portland, with the Revs. Linwood Doane and James Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow in Green Park Cemetery, Portland.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. (Indiana time) Wednesday and from 2 to 8 p.m. (Indiana time) Thursday at Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home, Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to. the Jay County Cancer Society.

LETHA HELEN BAILEY, 90, of Portland, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013. She was the widow of former Portland Mayor Vaughn Bailey. Surviving are her three daughters, Nancy Jo (Larry) Laux of Berne, Pamela K. (Dave) Sewell of rural Portland, Jodee L. Borgerding (fiance Dennis Roush) of Portland; son, Thomas V. (Jayne) Bailey of Frankfort, Ky.; 13 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren; Tricia Walter, the fiancee of the late George Bailey, the son of Letha Bailey. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home in Portland, with calling one hour prior. Visitation also from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
