      Velma Moniot

Velma, 86, passed away at Roo Lan Healthcare Center, Lacey, Washington, on Tuesday, August 11, 2009. Velma was born November 22, 1922 in Tillamook, Oregon to Jesse Joseph and Ethel Lucretia (Buzzard) Sackett.

When Velma completed her course of study, in the summer of 1944, at Pacific Union College, she returned to Los Gatos and the law office of her attorney-husband Carl L Hubbell, where she would remain for over twenty years. During this time she worked full-time, completed her education in law at the University of Santa Clara and raised Mr. Hubbell's three children, Ruth, James and Carl, Jr.

As a professional, she specialized in Probate and Internal Revenue Law, being considered, by many peers in Central California, one of the foremost experts in those fields.

In 1960, Velma met Joseph Moniot, freshly retired from the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked part time in the Law Office as Velma's assistant. They married in 1962 knowing that Velma was ill.

When 1966 arrived Velma knew she could no longer perform at the standards she had set so many years before and had to leave the office. Joseph was offered and accepted a position with the Defense Department in Military Procurement in June of that year. Velmanever returned to her beloved profession in Law but said that she had no regrets.

Velma and Joe moved to Kent, Washington in 1970. where he was assigned until 1975, returning to the Bay area and retiring in 1976.

During the years in Washington, Velma and Joseph fell in love with the Northwest and on New Years Day of 1980, returned to live in the city of Olympia. Velma and Joseph became active with the Masonic Fraternity. She, with her love for 'little people" had adopted every young one in the neighborhood and had been active with the Rainbow Girls and with Job's Daughters, and Eastern Star.
Velma was the sixth child in a family of 11 children, and is survived by her sister, Margaret Sackett Best of Lakeport, California; and 2 brothers, Ronald of Louisville, Colorado and Harry, near Toronto Canada.

Memorial Services followed by a gathering will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 22, 2009 at The Seventh Day Adventist Church 5831 Mullen Road SE Lacey, WA. Arrangements by Mills & Mills Funeral Home.
