Note:
The following is a transcription of a Fairfield newspaper obituary for Freeman Sackett. Unfortunately obituaries posted as photos are no longer allowed so this transcription is made for the benefit of any family researchers.

CAUTION: The obituary for Freeman Sackett uses the DOB as November 20, 1824; the headstone inscription uses the year "1825". A sibling of Freeman was Eldrid Sackett, whose own DOB is listed as Nov. 2, 1824. Is it possible that Eldred and Freeman were twins, with the DOB dates in November off one way or the other? Or was Freeman actually born on November 20, 1825, in line with his headstone inscription year? Will use the 1824 year for this memorial with caution and pending any clarification.

Freeman evidently came to the Fairfield area with his wife Lois independently of the arrival of his siblings, as noted in their obituaries. In all, seven Sackett siblings ended up in Jefferson county, Iowa.

Well Known Fairfield Resident Passes Away on Eve of 85th Birthday

Freeman Sackett, one of the best known of the older residents of Fairfield died this morning about nine o'clock at his home on East Broadway. The end came rather suddenly as he had been feeling badly for only a few hours prior to his death. Altho (sic) Mr. Sackett had been in ill health for several months but was able to be up and around his home until yesterday afternoon when he complained of feeling ill and was induced to lie down.

Mr. Sackett was born November 20, 1824 (sic. 1825 year on headstone inscription, which could be an engraving error) in Canfield, Ohio. In 1856 (sic. microfilm image unclear, could be 1858) he went to Macomb, Ill., and there engaged in stock buying, becoming very sucessfull in this line of business. Early in January of 1881 he went to Canfield Ohio, and claimed for his bride Miss Lois Scott. They lived in Macomb a few years and then came to Fairfield where they have made their home ever since. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Sackett, both of whom are dead (sic. Willie and Ada).

Mr. Sackett had been a faithful member of the Christian church for many years. In early manhood he united with the Masonic order and also the independent Order of Odd Fellows, holding his membership in Macomb, Ill.

Mr. Sackett is survived by a wife and two sisters, Mrs. S. B. Ross (sic. Huldah Sackett Ross) and Achusa Sackett (sic. Achsah Sackett), and one brother Simeon Scaket (sic. Simmons Sackett), all of this city.

The funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:30 at the residence and the remains will be laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery. Rev. G. W. Burch of the Christian church will conduct the funeral.
