Maidie Mason Barr | 2011 | Obituary
Maidie Mason Barr
Died: February 15, 2011
Maidie Mason Barr (nee Sackett), 87, beloved wife of Paris' son Hoyle R. Barr, Jr., and a resident of Paris, Texas for more than 30 years, died February 15, 2011 after prolonged illness.
More than anything else but her family, Maidie loved travel and creative pastimes, spending most of her free time reading, writing, drawing and painting. An avid rockhound for all of her life, she was completely unable to pass up an interesting rock, which made moving during the family's military years very interesting!
She entered Paris Junior College in her 60's to earn an AA degree in Art, and was one of the few students whose writing and art appeared in the same edition of the PJC student publication, Swingers of Birches. She often said that the day in 1980 that she and daughters Anne and Kathleen graduated together was one of the high points of her life.
Her popular paintings were frequent winners at the Paris Art Fair, and she was awarded the Paris Junior College Hall of Fame award for Fine Arts in 1995. In addition to painting, she applied her creative talents to award-winning floral arrangements and original jewelry fashioned from semiprecious stones.
Maidie participated in many community activities wherever she lived, and here in Paris she not only tutored kids in math and art, she also was a substitute teacher for PISD, and loved to garden and raise roses. She was a very active, long-time member of the Paris Garden Club and the Paris Art Club. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for more than 50 years, active in chapters on both coasts and locally.
As part of her military upbringing, Maidie traveled in Asia, living in China, the Philippines, Formosa (Taiwan) and Hawaii during her childhood. Before moving to Texas in 1962, she, Hoyle, Jr. and their daughters alternated living on both East and West coasts in true military style.
Maidie will be greatly missed by daughters Faith, Kathleen and Anne, grandchildren Cory, Julia and Natalie, and great-grandchildren Alexander and Mai?ana.
Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home will conduct graveside services 2:00 p.m. Friday Feb. 18, 2011 at Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Terry Germann and the Rev. Betty Clement officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the Rebecca Fitch Scholarship fund at Paris Junior College.

While looking for more information about Elizabeth Stanford Sackett
(1898-2002), wife of Rear Admiral Earl LeRoy Sackett (1897-1970), I came
across an entry in Army-Navy-Air Force Register and Defense Times, vol. 72:
SACKETT--At Norfolk, Va., August 11, 1922, to Ensign Earl LeRoy Sackett,
U. S. Navy, and Mrs. Sackett a daughter Maidie Mason; granddaughter of
Captain H. R. Stanford, C. E. C, U. S. Navy and Mrs. Stanford.
In Washington Social Register, December 1921, p. 144: Stanford Miss
Elizabeth L (Homer R) . . . Married Jun 1 Sackett Mr Earl LeRoy-USN . .
. at Hampton Roads Va.
Stanford, Captain & Mrs Homer R (Maidie Mason) USN. An.Cvc.Ann.Uvp.Wash'88
Stanford, Mr. Carrington M*--at SanFran . . .
Ensign& Mrs E LeRoy Sackett (Elizabeth L Stanford) USN
All of the preceding three lines are indicated as being at Phone No
1000, Naval Operating Base, Norfolk, VA
This confirms that Stanford was her maiden name, not a middle name.
In Notable Southern Families, vol. 2, p. 186, is a discussion of the
family of John Houston and Sarah Todd. Rather deep in that section it
mentions that "Maria (sic) B. Mason above, married ---------- Stanford
of U.S. Navy and has two children: Eliza Stanford Sackett and Carrington
Stanford.
