      16. BENONI4 CARTER (Thomas,3 Thomas,2 Rev. Thomas1) b. Hebron, Ct., July 10, 1745; d. Salisbury, Ct., April 11, 1812, ae 68; m. Warren, Ct., May 27, 1768, Anna Comstock, b. Kent, Ct., May 9, 1750, d. Salisbury, April 26, 1814, ae 64, (T. S.) dau. of Dea. Abel and Judith (Paine) Comstock.

Dea. Abel5 Comstock was a son of Capt. Daniel4 Comstock, only son of Daniel3 Comstock of Norwalk, Ct., the other two ancestors being Christopher2 of Norwalk, and (perhaps) William1 of Wethersfield, 1641, and New London, 1649/50. Judith5 Paine (Stephen,4 Samuel,3 Stephen,2 Stephen1) was born in Pomfret, Ct., Dec. 31, 1727, dau. of Stephen and Sarah (Leach) Paine. Her father was probably one of the earliest settlers of that part of Kent which later became the town of Warren. In the so-called "Footville Cemetery," in the town of Morris, Ct., not far from the southeastern boundary of Warren, is the following inscription:

      In Memory of
      Judith Wife of
      Deac Abel Comstock Di
      ed Dec. 19, 1803
      Aged 76

Abel Comstock was one of the first deacons in the Warren church. Benoni Carter lived a little north of the church in Warren, nearly opposite the cemetery. He owned a large amount of real estate, and was interested in several manufacturing enterprises in Warren. In company with Rev. Peter Starr and Capt. Justus Sackett, he built the first grist mill there. About 1794 he sold his property in Warren and removed to Salisbury, Ct., where he resided in what is known as the "Weatogue" district, his home being near

the site of the residence of the late Robert Little. In 1799 he bought land in Norfolk, Ct., which he deeded to his sons Adoniram and Seth. He was on the committee which built the Congregational church in Salisbury, 1799, for which services the town passed a vote of thanks Jan. 13, 1800.

Benoni Carter was sergeant in the company commanded by his brother, Capt. Joseph Carter, 13th Regiment of Militia, at New York 1776; also at Danbury when the British made their raid in 1777, and at Peekskill, 1779. He died during the great epidemic of 1812-13, and is buried with his wife and other relatives in what is known as the "Weatogue" Cemetery, Salisbury, Ct.
