Ralph Akers
WEST LIBERTY -- Ralph M. Akers, 75, died Saturday morning, Aug. 10, 1991, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following an extended illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 13, at First Church United in West Liberty. Burial, will military honors,, will be at the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the West Liberty Chapel of the Barker Funeral Home. There will be a Masonic service at 8 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established.
Mr. Akers was born Feb. 5, 1916, at Tarkio, Mo., a son of Joseph and Adella Carman Akers. On Oct. 12, 1941, he was married in Minneapolis, to Betty Cling.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; one son, Joseph V. Akers, of West Liberty; one brother, Fred Akers, of San Diego; two grandsons, Bret and Brad Akers.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
He attended college at the University of Missouri and moved to Iowa in 1936. He first farmed south of Eddyville, Iowa.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army iN the European Command, and also served in the U.S. Army Reserves for several years.
He was a retired Iowa State Highway Patrol trooper, serving in District 12, from 1948 to 1971. He later worked in security at Louis Rich Foods Comapny (SIC) in West Liberty. He was a member of the First Church United, the Mount Calvary Masonic Lodge No. 95 of West Liberty, KAABA Shrine of Davenport, the Davenport Consistory.
He was also a member of the Iowa State Patrol Association and the Iowa State Troopers Association and a member and past patron of the Lotus Chapter Order of Eastern Star and the West Liberty American Legion.

Akers-Carman Wedding
On wednesdahy evening, Oct. 24, a pretty quiet wedding took place at the home of Mrs. T. C. Carman, Dudley, Iowa, when her eldest daughter Miss Adella J. Carman was united in marriage to Joseph M. Akers, of Chillicothe, Iowa. Promptly at 8 o'clock the birdal party entered the room and took their place beneath an arch of evergreens, and were united in marriage by Rev. Geo. E. Monkman, of Pella, Ia. the bride was becomingly attired in a beartiful white Persian lawn dress. After the ceremony the comapany retired to the dining room where a delicious supper wass served. the bride is one of the most popular and successful school teachers and a highly esteemed young woman. the groom is an excellent young man and is a merchant in Chillicothe. Mr. and Mrs. Akers will be at home in Chillicothe to their friends.

Betty C. Akers, 94, died Sunday April 14, 2013 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 A.M. Thursday April 18, 2013 at the First Church United in West Liberty. Visitation will be held Wednesday 4 to 7 P.M. at the First Church United, 1100 North Calhoun St., West Liberty . Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Memorials may be made to West Liberty Fire and Rescue Unit, Ronald McDonald House or University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
Betty was born the daughter of Victor and Ethel Cling. She attended Eddyville High School and later the University of Iowa, William Penn College and Beauty School in Des Moines. On October 12, 1941 Betty was united in marriage to Ralph Akers in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
She had taught in County School near Eddyville, worked as a bookkeeper for the Ford Implement Dealership, Ford Garage, West Liberty Ready Mix and served as the Librarian at the West Liberty Library for over 35 years until her retirement.
She was a member of the First Church United, Eastern Star, Rotary, T.T.T. Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by one son Joe (JoAnne) Akers, two grandchildren: Bret Akers and his significant other Linda Coudron, and Brad (Mindy) Akers all of West Liberty. 6 grandchildren: Gibson Akers, Alie Akers, Abie Akers, Macy Akers, McKinzie Akers and Joseph Akers. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Ralph.
