An Elopment at Nilwood
It is no use -- when they want to
get married and are in earnest
about the matter, you might just
as well give consent; if you don't,
the chances are ninety-nine out of
a hundred that they'll run away.
'Twas thus it happened at Nilwood
last Thursday night. The parties
were Mr. Horace Sacket and Miss
Elvera Mcgee. On the evening
in question, they boarded the eve-
ning South bound train and soon
were not only in Missouri, but also
had been made one flesh. We
learn that they have been duly for-
given and we hope will so live
that there will be no regrets at
their action.

The name Horace Sacket comes from the following newspaper article:
The Enquirer, Carlinville, Macoupin, Illinois;
Thurdsay, August 5, 1875

Searches for a Horace Sackett who could be the one who married Elzera McGhee/McGee give only one prospect, 32739-Horace Norman Sackett (1859-1906). Horace was born in Ohio. He was listed as single in the 1870 census in Wilson Co., KS. In 1880 he was listed as a single hotel clerk in Christian Co., IL. He died in Madison Co., IL in 1906.
Although it is yet to be proven, I believe that 29319-Homer Sackett, in the 1870 census below, is the same person as Horace Sackett. Homer is listed as age 17 and was born in Michigan. Homer died in 1878 and is buried in the Waverly East Cemetery, Waverly, Morgan, Illinois. [Find A Grave Memorial# 107124487]
The 1870 census for Talkington was enumerated on August 22, 1870. Homer's father died in Waverly, Morgan, Illinois on December 8, 1870 so it appears that the family moved to Waverly after August 22, 1870. Waverly, IL is about 15 miles Northwest of Nilwood, Macoupin Co. where Elzera "Ella" McGhee lived. Talkington is about 12 miles north of Nilwood, so it is possible that Homer and Elzera had met before the Sackett family moved to Waverly.
In 1880 Elzera is listed in the census next door to her father's household as Ella Sackett, a widow with two children; Clarence C. and Ann Aug[usta]. The birth place of their father is given as Michigan, thae same as Homer's birthplace. If Homer was the father of her children, they would probably have been born in Waverly, IL
Another indication could be the fact that Ella's son, Clarence C. Sackett named his first son, Homer M. Sackett. Did he name his first son after his father?
