Maude Bowen Greene.
Maude Bowen Greene, wife of Clayton
G. Greene, was born in the town of
Mansfield, July 29, 1875. on the farm
where -her father Motes Bowen and
grandfather had lived for many years.
Her mother was the late Adaline Harvey
Bowen.
During her early childhood she attended
the district school at Home,later
attending the high school at Ellicottville
where she fitted herself for a teacher
and taught very successfully in some of
the local schools for several terms, after
which she entered state normal school
at Fredonia from which she graduated
with honor in the class of 1900, and
again took up the work of a teacher.
Later she entered Syracuse university,
and continued her work as an instructor,
after a special course from that
school.
As a child and all her life her ambition
was to become a useful member of
society and both as a student and an
instructor her endeavor was to fit herself
for that position in life.
She was a fine teacher of about 12
years experience, thorough and painstaking
and much beloved by her pupils.
During the last of her work she
taught at Harrisville and St. Johnsville
high schools having charge of the
science department-of the latter place
for two years, resigning from that position
in 1911 to spend the following
winter with her sister Mrs. Robert
Widrig at St. Cloud, Fla.
On July 8, 1912, she was married to
Clayton C Greene.
At the time of her
death they were living on the Greene
place for a short time, expecting before
winter to go to California, ?where he
had lived several years.
To them was born a little daughter
Maude E., May 6, 1913, which seemed
all that was needed to complete their
happiness, but the mother was left
only one short week with her baby and
then she was called to come up higher,
leaving a most sad home behind.
--She died May 13, 1913. The funeral
was held from the Presbyterian church
at Ellicottville and she was laid at rest
in beautiful Sunset Hill cemetery;??
It can be truly said of her, that
those who knew her best loved her
best .
Besides the little daughter a loving
husband, sister and father, she leaves a
large circle of friends to mourn their
loss.
