  • Notes
    • There is no question that the Francis Nichols who died in Blue Ash, OH was identical to the Francis Nichols who lived first in Swanzey, NH (1787), then in Putney, VT (1790), and in Thetford, VT. In Orange Co., VT deeds, there are two land transfers (29 May 1798 and 18 April 1799) that contain both the names of Francis Nichols and JONATHAN NICHOLS. One is a deed of land from Jonathan to Francis, and there appears to be no doubt that these two were brothers. There's also no doubt that Jonathan Nichols was Jonathan Nichols Jr., b. Bolton, 25 July 1754. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, was wounded at the Battle of Bennington, moved to Thetford, and was surveyor and then sheriff of Orange County, VT. Jonathan and his family moved to Westfield, Chautauqua Co., NY about 1814 and he died in Westfield, 26 April 1842, in his 88th year of age. - [Robert Hanscom on Genforum.com; Nichols Family Forum]

Lorrel Nichols, son of Jonathan was born Feb 9 1794; came with the family to Westfield: became the owner of the farm which he occupied until his removal to the village of Westfield in 1869. He was killed by the explosion of a boiler on the steamer Pennsylvania, in June, 1858, 70 miles below Memhis, being on his way from Texas, to visit the family at Westfield. Birth: 1754
      Death: Apr. 26, 1842
Burial: East Ripley Cemetery, Ripley, Chautauqua County, New York, USA

      NICHOLS, JONATHAN--Born at Bolton, Mass., 1754. Died April 26, 1842, aged 88 years. Grave in Lower (EAST) Ripley Cemetery with D. A. R. marker: "6 N. H.
Mil. Rev. War." Enlisted in 1775, served four years, was wounded in the face at the battle of Bennington. Emigrated to western New York in 1813 with wife
and nine children, which required a journey of two months, and on their arrival at Westfield at once commenced the erection of a log cabin in which
they resided through the winter. His wife, *PHENE", died Nov. 8, 1844, in the 77th year of her age. Their children were: *Lorrel, * Olney, *Orvis,*Achsah, *Wiseman, *Chloe,* Jonathan, *Lucinda
Jonathan Nichols fought in the Revolution and was wounded in the Battle of Bennington. He served under Captain Moses Nichols of Thetford, Vermont. in 1825 when Lafayette made his journey through the country. At Westfield he stopped for dinner and Jonathan as a
Revolutionary soldier was presented to him. After the French way he lightly
kissed grandfather on both cheeks, saying that he loved every soldier of
that war. Grandfather always wore his hair in a queue, tied with a ribbon,
long silk stockings, buckled shoes and knee breeches, he thought long
trousers were terrible. You can imagine how surprised this staid reserved
old New Englander was to be kissed by another man. But he bore it bravely."
