Notes |
- Thanks to the research of John Howard Sackett (TSFA Membe # 138), a descendant of Harvey Chafy Sackett, we were able to make a positive anceatrial connection for Harvey Chafy Sackett back through Simon Sackett. Most of the material in the notes for Jsoeph, his son, Joseph and grandson, Harvey C. Sackett, is from John Sackett's research. John and I exchanged a large number of emails as we compiled the information. - [Thurmon King]
------
634-Joseph Sackett was born 3 Dec 1764 at Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA, son of 198-Erastus and Elizabeth Leonard Sacket, and died 17 Jan 1842 at Naples, Ontario Co., NY. "Pittsfield Families" Vol 9 S-V 974.42, p. 117; by COOKE gives the name of Joseph's wife as Lucy Goff, of Dalton. (m. pub Oct 29, 1786)
Joseph's household was enumerated in Pittsfield, MA in 1790 showing 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. One of the children, name and sex not given, died 3 Jan 1791 at age 14 months of worms - [COOKE vol 26 1st Church of Pittfield ]. Due to the fact that, Zelotas, b. c1788 would have been the male under 16 in the 1790 census; the child that died in Jan 1791 was probably one of the daughters.
Joseph was on the Pittsfield Tax List for 1795; 1 poll, no tax listed.
Cooke, on the Family Sheet for Joseph (p. 117), states; "He probably died before 1797, as he is not among the heirs of Erastus who signed an agreement."[in that year.]
His household has not been found in the 1800 census unless he was living in Weybridge, Addison Co., VT where an unidentified Joseph Sackett's household was enumerated in 1800:
Sacket, Joseph
Year: 1800; State: VT; County: Addison; Township: Weybridge
Roll: Page:
Census: 300 10 - 100 10 - 00
From the 1810 census it appears that Joseph had moved to Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY where his household was enumerated:
Sacket, Joseph
Year: 1810; State: NY; County: Onondaga; Township:
Roll: M252_34«tab»Page: 2
102 01 - 101 10
It is possible that Joseph made the move from Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA to Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY at, or near, the same time that Jedediah Cleveland and his family moved there from Berkshire Co. where the Cleveland household was enumerated at Dalton, Berkshire Co., MA. Jedediah's household was enumerated in Onondaga Co., NY in 1810.
According to records in Onondaga Co., NY it appears that Jedediah Cleveland was a delegate to the meeting of the Union Congregational Society for the towns of Manlius and Pompey on 3 Jul 1803. He was elected as one of the trustees of the "Second Congregational Society of the town of Pompey: 6 Oct 1806.
The importance of the presence of Jedediah Cleveland's household is shown by the fact that Joseph Sackett, Jr., son of 634-Joseph Sackett, was married in January, 1814 to Phylinda Cleveland, daughter of Zedediah and Lydia Merrill Cleveland.
In 1818 Joseph bought property from Jonathan Coomer in Ontario County (Liber. 31; pate 525). And in 1820 the household of Joseph was enumerated at Gorham, Ontario Co., NY and his sons Joseph, Jr., and Zelotus Sackett were enumerated in Naples, Ontario Co., NY.
[A history of Ontario County, New York and its people, Volume 1; By Charles F. Milliken, Lewis Historical Publishing Co; Gorham Families, Page 385:
"...On lot 58 was a man by the name of Koomer, who was succeeded by a Mr. Sackett, who in turn gave way for Isaac Shaw, and this property still remains in the Shaw family. Jonathan Stearns, in 1803, settled on lot 54, and Addison, his son, and Emmit, his grandson, have been his successors up to the present time.]
By 1830 the households of 634-Joseph and Zelotus Sackett were both in Naples, Ontario Co., NY while the household of Joseph, Jr. was enumerated in Independence, Allegany Co., NY.
Joseph Sackett's household was enumerated at Naples in 1840 and it appears that his wife had died between 1830 and 1840. There was a younger family living in his household at that time which consisted of husband and wife age 40-50 with a son age 5-10 and two daughters ages under 5 and 5-10.
A deed was recorded in 1840 in which property was conveyed to Joseph Sackett from Thomas Gold (Liber. 68; page 106).
Probate Records in Ontario County, NY show that Joseph died intestate 17 Jan 1842. Zelotus Sackett petitioned the court on 25 Apr 1844 to serve as executor of Joseph's estate with Otis Fuller. Wording of the petetion seems to indicate that Zelotus was a son of Joseph. Zelotus stated that Joseph died on the "... Seventeenth day of January A.D. 1842 without leaving any last will & Testament within the knowledge information or belief of the said petitioner and without leaving any widow heir surviving & leaving him surviving the said petitioner & others his children ..."
On March 5, 1845, Zelotus Sackett and Otis Fuller, administrators of the estate petitioned the court for permission to sell the real estate to pay Joseph's outstanding debts. In the petition we read
"... that the names of the heirs of deceased are Huldah Sackett, Joseph Sackett of the town of Independence Allegany County, Erastus Sackett and Eliza Watkins wife of ?____? J. Watkins of Naples, the said Huldah, Erastus and Eliza being upon the premises, all of lawful age ..."
