In Memoriam
James W. Pogue was born in Green (sic) Co., Ohio July 3, 1845. Died at his home 3 miles northeast of Gresham, Oct. 24, 1919, aged 74 years 3 months 21 days.
He was married to Matilda Jane Berryhill, Oct. 3, 1867. To this union were born 11 children, five boys and six girls, two boys and one girl dying in infancy. The sons surviving are: Perry of Greeley, Nebr., James E. and Wesley of Gresham, Nebr., and the daughters are: May Barbee of Albion, Nebr., Alice Raikes of Greeley, Nebr., Ruth Ruddock of Gresham, Nebr., Mary Lance of Ponoka, Canada. and Catherine of Gresham, Nebr. He also leaves twenty-four grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one brother and three sisters.
In 1868 he moved from Ohio to Cedar Co., Iowa and in 1872 to Seward Co., Nebr., his late home.
At the age of twenty-one he united with the Christian Church and after moving to Nebraska joined the Congregational Church. In 1893 he became a member of the Presbyterian Church at Gresham Nebr., where he remained faithful until death claimed him.
Merely to recount the outstanding events of a life so nobly lived falls immeasurably short of the just tribute which is its due.
He was one of the very earliest pioneers of Seward Co., "blazing the trail," figuratively speaking, in the fall of '71 for the wife and small children which followed the ensuing year. When he arrived in Lincoln the remainder of the journey to the site where the comfortable home, his last dwelling place, now stands, must be made on foot over a broad expanse of prairie sparsely broken here and there by a dugout or small shanty. The following spring he hauled the material from Lincoln to build a frame dwelling for the comfort of his loved ones, the first and only frame residence in a stretch of miles extending away beyond the range of vision as the eye swept the unbroken horizon. The privations of pioneer life and the scourge of grasshoppers were known to himself and faithful wife who was separated from him by death nine years ago.
Many of the older residents recall his efficient service as S. S. Supt., many others refer to his profitable instruction as Bible teacher for he was pre-eminently a Bible student, and when ministers were scarce, he was known unostentatiously to enter the pulpit and serve in that capacity. He played his part nobly in the drama of building this great western empire in that time when clean living and high ideals meant more even than conquering the virgin soil.
The Rev. A. S. Hutcheson was called from his pastorate at Port Calhoun to officiate in the last sad rites. In his closing remarks he paid a rare tribute to the lofty character of this scholarly idealist whom he learned thru years of close friendship to love and appreciate. The funeral was conducted from the late residence and interment made in Blue Ridge Cemetery.

IN MEMORIAM
Lily May Pogue was born August 11th, 1868, in Fletcher, Ohio, and died at her home in Gresham, Nebr., March 23rd, 1943.
She was united in marriage to William Ulysses Barbee, January 20th, 1886, who preceded her in death, December 23rd, 1920, as did three of the twelve children born to this marriage, Belle, May 6th, 1912; Benne, Dec. 10th, 1917; and Irma, June 5th, 1933.
The following children survive: Dr. James Barbee of Sutton, Nebr.; George Barbee and Mrs. Nina Bond of Gresham, Nebr.; Ellis Barbee of Eugene, Oregon; Walter Barbee of Gibsonburg, Ohio; Wesley Barbee of Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Irene Brandt of Loretto, Nebr.; John Barbee of Lynwood, Calif.; and Keith Barbee of Lusk, Wyo., also 19 grandchildren besides one brother, W. B. Pogue, Gresham, Nebr.; and three sisters, Mrs. J. A. Ruddock, Gresham, Nebr.; Mrs. Wm. Ross, Ponoka, Canada and Mrs. T. E. Grafit, Orange, Calif.
Mrs. Barbee came with her parents to Iowa and later to Nebraska when she was a small child. This was in the days when Indian scares were prevelent (sic) and she knew real hardships during the drouth (sic) years. The first few years of her marriage were spent on a homestead in western Nebraska in a sod shanty where the hardships were equally great.
During World War I four of her sons were in the country's service.
She was an ideal mother and with her large family, to whom she was devoted, yet found time for painting, extensive reading, exquisite handwork, and all the finer things of life.
She was a conscientious christian (sic) and loyal to the church of which she was a faithful member. She retained her membership in the Albion Methodist church where she lived at the time of her husband's death. Her friends were numbered only by her acquaintances and the neighborhood truly mourns her passing.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Gresham on Friday afternoon, March 26, with Rev B. N. Kunkel in charge. Interment in Albion Cemetery.
I cannot say, and I will not say
That she is dead. She is just away!
