By Kimberly Ratliff
Of the Post-Dispatch
GODFREY -- Kenneth R. Elliott, a longtime businessman, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Alton Memorial Hospital of natural causes. He was 88.
Mr. Elliott was born on Oct. 11, 1913, to Samuel and Verna Elliott in Kansas City, Kan.
At the age of 16, Mr. Elliott started Kaw Point Boat and Motor in Kansas City. The business soon expanded to build river tow-boats and barges, and the name changed to Elliott Fairfax Shipyards.
In 1937, Mr. Elliott employed more than 200 workers. The company closed in the early 1940s due to the Depression.
In 1935, Mr. Elliott married Winifred Jean Hazen of Kansas City. She died in 2000.
Mr. Elliott bought a grain and livestock farm in Godfrey in 1946. The farm is still in operation today.
In 1951, Mr. Elliott opened Kenneth Elliott Co., a sales firm that sold pipeline equipment in Godfrey. In 1956, he started Rotary Ram Corp. in Godfrey, where he built his own patented pipeline products. At the age of 84, Mr. Elliott decided to relinquish the daily operations of the companies and managed only special projects. The companies are still in operation today.
"My father was a very steady and dedicated businessman," said his son, Kent Elliott of Godfrey. "Whatever he did, he kept his mind on it and he always wanted to do a good job. He believed in excellence."
In addition to his son Kent, Mr. Elliott is survived by three other sons, Bruce Elliott of Seattle, Alan Elliott of Brighton and Lee Elliott of Grafton; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral was Friday at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Godfrey. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society-Collinsville Area Office, 118 South Seminary, Collinsville, Ill. 62234.
