Notes |
- Note by Kanen Black:
Robert Black was initially identified in Haw's genealogy; birth and death dates confirmed by visit to Eden Cemetery in 1988. The Ontario Land Registry Index confirmed his father purchased his Mariposa farm in 1825, so I assumed Robert was born there. His death record subsequently confirmed this.
No christening registration has ever been found for Robert, but it is possible that the officiating minister recorded his name incorrectly, confusing "Albert" and "Robert." If so, he was Mary's twin.
He signed his name "Robbert" on his marriage register. His witnesses were Richard Uncles and Hugh Copely (Copeland?).
I have not yet found the christening records for four of the first five children in the Robert Black-Mary Perrin family. The Cameron christenings of their sixth to thirteenth children follow their move from Mariposa Twp to Eldon Twp about 1866. Some of Robert's siblings in Mariposa were christened in Cannington, Ontario, as was his third child, Susan Bathsheba. Why weren't the others ? And where was the family living during the 1861 Census--near his parents or hers? I am troubled by the fact that I have not found them in this census, although they may well have tried their luck elsewhere when they were newlyweds. Robert Black and Mary Perrin pioneered on Con 11, Lot 17 in Eldon Twp., Victoria County, Ontario. Interestingly, Mary Perrin's maiden name appears on many of the land records, including the earlier ones. Perhaps she was more literate than Robert. Their first log house was supposed to have burned to the ground during haying season in a fire started by a child. (Source: granddaughter Mary Black.) However, great-great grandson Daryl Black disputes this story, claiming it was son John Henry Black's log house which burned on the adjacent property. A log house still stands on Lot 18, although it's on the site of a proposed garbage dump. The cabin is two-story, and all but one window has been boarded up. This glassed window reveals a storage area and upper loft. Vines are creeping up one side of the building, withered and reddened by the October air. How difficult to imagine 13 children growing up here! I find myself admiring Mary Perrin for her industry and sanity. Milton Black and his wife are currently owners; they built a veranda swathed brick home behind the cabin only a few years back. (Source of grant information: Ontario Land Registry Index, Eldon Twp., p.4434. Assigned 1866/12/22. Date ID 2. Transaction type A. Deed #01 CI5 005 589.)
Opposite this property, on the other side of the highway known as Victoria Road, there is a further extension of this lot, which may actually be in Fenelon Township. This is where a newer, ranch-style house owned by Daryl's father Alfred is located. Mary Perrin Black was in fact the original grantee of Lot 17 the 21 May 1869, all 90 acres, which had dwindled to 88 acres by 1880. Sometimes with her husband Robert, and then by herself after his death, she retained this property until it was granted to her son Thomas Josiah 17 June 1922 and subsequently to his son, Thomas James 15 June 1939, an event not registered until 1949. However, various mortgages were taken out on this property, right up to 1897. Mortgagers included the Lewis Broughall in 1869; myriad Lundys up through 1891 and finally the Victoria L.S.C. in 1897.
By the time of 1881 Census for Eldon Township, Robert's wife Mary, 43, was listed as the head of household and as a farmer. Although ten children follow in chronological order, my great grandfather John Henry is already married and gone. The twins have not yet been born. Robert, 48, is tacked onto the end and appended in the Remarks column is the phrase "unsound mind." His death certificate failed to provide any medical reason for this remark; the cause of his death at 58 was merely recorded as general debility. His death register was signed by Dr. J.W. Wood. (Ont. Vital Statistics. Eldon Township. MS 935, reel 62, #015669.)
