      James Harold 'Had' Noakes

Herald and News (Klamath Falls, OR) - Thursday, April 29, 2004

James Harold "Had" Noakes, 88, died April 26, 2004, of natural causes at his Macdoel residence.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lakeview Cemetery in Macdoel with the Rev. Billy Hamblin officiating. O'Hair & Riggs Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Noakes was born March 22, 1916, in Sevier, Utah, to John Russel and Martha Mattie (Heki) Noakes.

He was the middle of five children born to an Idaho pioneer family.

When he was about 3 years old, he moved with his family to Idaho, settling in Jerome, where he grew up on a farm.

He later quit school to help support his family, mining with his brother, who had leased a section of the Deer Trail Mine in Marysvale, Utah.

In 1937, he came to Tulelake to visit some friends, found work and decided to stay. He met Mary Ellen Stevenson there and they were married on July 3, 1938, in Reno.

They made their first home in Tulelake. He worked on road construction.

They subsequently moved to Macdoel to help his wife's parents operate their ranch in Red Rock Valley. After that, he worked for Guy and Mary Porterfield on the JF Ranch east of Dorris.

Pleased with his hard work, the Porterfields gave him five acres of potatoes to use as seed to plant his own potato fields on Stateline Road.

He also worked with the Stevensons on the Meiss Ranch, where they grew alfalfa, grain, hay, and potatoes and raised livestock.

In the 1960s, Mr. Noakes worked as a heavy equipment operator and did custom bailing for the Forest Service. He next purchased earth-moving equipment and helped build canals in the Tulelake area. He also took his equipment to the San Francisco Bay area for several years.

He returned to his home in Macdoel in 1969 and contracted with Weyerhaeuser Co. to clear land for tree planting.

He retired in the mid 1980s to enjoy his family and hobbies.

Mr. Noakes loved the outdoors. He liked planning and dredging for gold and especially liked to go hunting in the Red Rock Valley with his friends and family members.

He also enjoyed hiking to various mountain lakes and streams to go fishing, camping, elk and deer hunting, and eliminating squirrels from the fields of local farmers.

He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the California Rifle and Pistol Association.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Jerald "Jerry" and Laurie Noakes of Macdoel; grandson Brent Noakes and his wife Becki of Macdoel; great-grandchildren Colby Watkins/Noakes, James "Jimmy" Edward Noakes and Olivia Grace Noakes of Macdoel;. and numerous nieces and nephews.

He also leaves caregiver Patricia "Patty" Rhinehardt of Macdoel and long-time special friends, the Porterfield family.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Harold Noakes Jr.; wife Mary Ellen Noakes; brothers Thomas, Glenn and Wayne Noakes; sister Josephine Levitt; and many close friends and hunting buddies.

Memorial donations may be made to Klamath Hospice, 437 Main St., Klamath Falls, OR 97601, or Butte Valley Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 9, Dorris, CA 96023.
