      Car Crashes Into 'Tulsan'

      Three Persons Killed In Accident at Crossing Near Independence

      Independence (AP) -- Three persons were killed and three others were injured, one critically, Tuesday in the collision of their car and a northbound Santa Fe passenger train, The Tulsan.

      The accident occurred at a crossing on Highway 75 at Bolton, seven miles southwest of here.

      The dead were Identified as Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hoard of near Wayside, Kas., and their son, William, 16.

      Another son, Albert J. D. Hoard, 19, was injured critically and a three-year-old daughter, Betty Jane Hoard, suffered shock. A Virginia Wilson, 19, Niotaze, was listed as not seriously injured at an Independence hospital where all the injured persons were taken.

      Edward Main of independence said he was driving toward the crossing when the car occupied by the victims passed him at a high speed, and hit the train.

      None of the cars of the train left the tracks.

      J. R. Purvis, Kansas City, conductor on the train, said the accident occurred at 10:25 a. m. The train was due in Independence at 10:15 a. m.

      After the collision, the automobile ended up in a ditch containing water about three feet deep.

      The little girl was brought to Independence on the train and then taken to the hospital. The injured man and woman were brought here by ambulance.

      The train left Tulsa at 8:30 a.m. It was due in Kansas City at 1:30 p.m.

      Train-auto Crash Kills Three Kansans

      INDEPENDENCE, KAN., Feb. 20, - (UP) ? Three members of a family were killed and three other person were injured, two critically, today when their car was struck by a Santa Fe streamliner at a grade crossing on a detour near Bolton, Kan.

      Sheriff Bill Lessman said the dead were:
      Charles Oscar Hoard, 57, his wife, and 16-year-old son, Bill, of Wayside, Kan.

      J.D. Hoard, 19, another son, and a daughter, Betty, 3, were reported in critical condition at Mercy hospital here. Miss Virginia Wilson, 19, Niotaze, Kan., said by the sheriff to be a friend of J.D. Hoard, also was admitted to the hospital. Her condition is said to be "fair."

      Lessman said it was raining lightly at the time of the accident. He said a motorist at that crossing can see the track for half a mile in each direction.

      The car was hurled about 40 yards down the right-of-way and tossed into two feet of water in a hole near the tracks. Officers said five of the six occupants of the car were tossed from it before it landed in the water hole.
