      21/17. Capt. Caleb Allen (sic) [Note that the rest of the entry, including hisl will, refers to him as Caleb Alling, not Allen] was the youngest son of Sergt. Samuel Alling. He was but 15 at his father's death, and probably remained on the homestead with his mother and sisters; for after he was 21, his sisters, Sarah, Elizabeth and
      Esther, with his brothers, James, Theophilus, Daniel, and probably the others, deeded to him their right in the house, barn and home lot of their honored father, Samuel Ailing. From this it would seem he settled down on his father's homestead, but later in life removed to that part of New Haven which became Hamden, where he died in 1756. He married three times, first, Hannah, daughter of Samuel Bishop, and by her had one son, Samuel, who, with his mother, died soon after his birth. He married (2) Thankful, daughter of Caleb Mix, and by her had five children, when she died, and he married (3) Hannah, daughter of Samuel Ailing, Tertius, who was son of John Ailing, Sen.;
      by her he had two children. His family record and descent follow.

      26/224. Charles Alling, s. of Capt. Caleb; m. Jan. 17, 1753, Hannah, dau. of Ebenezer and Abigail (Bishop) Dorman (see note 28/24), b. May 12, 1733; d. Han. 25, 1808; r. Hamden.

      Charles and Hannah (Dorman) Allen had no children of their own, but they received others into their family to care and provide for. They took his brother Asa's son Abraham and educated him for the ministry and gave him their homestead, upon which he lived until his death in 1836. Abigail, wife of Samuel Dorman, Amelia Woodin, wife of Samuel Ford, and Lydia Bradley, wife of Moses Cooper, were all recipients of their care and benefactions, and were given bequests by will.

      Charles Alling was in the engagement at the invasion of the British in New Haven in July 1779 . . . .
