Charles E. Ayer was born in Niagara, New York, in 1856 and raised in Kansas - but not for long. Young Ayer suffered at the hands of a step-father. He was eight years old when he ran away from home. He never went back again.

Charles Ayer married Miss Hattie Vilea in Topeka, Kansas. When the Ayers moved to Northwestern Colorado in 1888 to take up a homestead on the Colorado-Wyoming line a few miles south of the town of Dixon, they had two children, Lawrence, age three, and Phoebe, who was just six weeks old. Ten years later another child, a son who was named Walter, was born to them; and still later, a second daughter.

Ayer was a hard worker and he was ambitious. The Ayers had made a good start on their homestead when suddelnly they were overwhelmed by misfortune. While he was working cattle one day, Charley Ayer's horse fell with him, breaking his pelvis. For the better part of a year he lay in Dinver's Saint Luke's Hospital waiting for the bones to knit. Meanwhile his wife had found it necessary to mortgage their ranch in order to meet the hospital and doctor bills; and when, finally, Ayer was allowed to go home, he was deep in debt.

Heretofore Ayer had been merely one more energetic homesteader intent on bringing his land into cultivation as quickly as possible and on accumulating some cattle. Even though he was more capable than most, for the time being Ayer was partially crippled, and his ranch was heavily mortgaged. With a family to raise, he realized that, as the saying goes, he was "in the bite of the line."

It was this condition of affairs that, such being the uses of adversity, made a big-time cattleman out of Charley Ayer. Desperate circumstances callng for desperate remedies, Ayer took to gambling; not at the card table, but on the livestock market. More sepcifically, he commenced speculating in steers. Having bought young stock in the spring of the year, he ran them on the range during summer months and sold them on the fall market hoping to profit not only from their gain in weight, but by virtue of an advance in prices.

It didn't always work out that way. The market had a habit of going down as well as rising. But Charley Ayer's luck had changed, and he made money in the steer business.

Of equal importance, the buying and selling cattle Charley Ayer made valuable contacts; with the American Livestock Company among others. Watching the operation of the L 7 ranch under absentee ownership, Ayer accurately envisioned what the end would be; and when it came, he was primed to pick up the pieces. It could be said that he fell heir to the crumbling empire of the L 7 through the courtesy of the American Livestock Company that financed him when he got title to the winter headquarters of the ranch by purchasing delinquent tax certificates from the treasurer of Routt County, Colorado.

From the mid-1890's until he sold out in 1917, Ayer played a major role in the range-cattle business of Northwestern Colorado. - [Supplied by Meg Asay]

Charles E. Ayer, for over 30 years
one of the most prominent ranch and
      livestock owners in Northwestern
      Colorado, died last week Wednesday

      Pioneer Snake River Citizen Succumgs
      Suddenly at Denver Hospital
      Resident Here Since 1885
      C. E. Ayer, one of the best known and most prominent pioneer
citizens of the Snake river valley, died suddenly in Denver at 12:40
      a. m. on Wednesday of last week.
About a week ago Mr. Ayer started from Denver to visit his eldest
son, Lawrence, who lives near Battle Creek. He was taken ill en route
and went back to Denver, where he wa taken to St. Luke's hospital. He
suffered a stroke of paralysis and it was thought at the time that he
might recover. His condition became steadily worse and he died at
12"40 o'clock Wednesday morning. He leaves to mourn his death his
wife, two sons, Lawrence, of Battle Creek, Colo., and Walter of Longmont,
Colo., and three daughters, Mrs M. E. Pickett, Mrs. Harold Egner, and
      Mrs. Joe Hoffman.
Mr Ayer came from Kansas, where he was sheriff of one of the counties in
that state, to Wyoming in 1885. He brought his family, consisting of his
wife, his son Lawrence and his daughter Phoebe, with him and settled on
the place two miles south of Dixon, which is now owned by C. M. Thompson.
The other children, Mrs. Egner, Mrs. Hoffman and Walter were born in
      Wyoming.
Mr. Ayer made rapid progress financially and finally became one of the
most prominent cattle and land owners in Carbon county. In 1919 he sold
his cattle and horses to a Mr. Munson of Omaha, and his ranch on Willow
creek to C. M. Thompson. This event marked his retirement from active
business life. He moved to Denver soon after and was living there at the
      time of his death.
Mr. Ayer was one of the most highly respected citizens in the Snake River
valley and his death was a blow, not only to his immediate family, but also
      to his many friends here.

      C. E. Ayer

Mr. C. E. Ayer was born in Erie County, New York, March 29th, 1856 and was therefore 65 years, 4 months and 13 days of age at the time of his death. When a child, Mr. Ayer moved with his parents from New York state to Minnesota and a few years later immigrated from there to Muscotah, Kansas, where he grew to manhood. He was a blacksmith by trade and served two years as sheriff of Decatur County when that county was first organized in western Kansas.

On February 6, 1884, he was married to Hattie J. Viles of Muscotah. Kansas, who survives him and lives at the family home, 296 South Ogden street, Denver, Colorado. To this union were born fife children: two sons, Lawrence C., who lives at Battle Creek, Colorado; Walter D., who is at home; Mrs. M. E. Pickett, of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Mrs. J. H. Hoffman, of Boise, Idaho; and Mrs. H. D. Egner of Longmont, Colorado.

In 1888, Mr. Ayer moved with his family to a homestead on Willow Creek in Colorado where by the grit and industry possessed only by the western pioneer he overcame every obstacle and developed one of the best ranch and cattle business in the Snake River Valley. Two years ago he sold this property to C. M. Thompson and moved to Denver, where he died.

Mr. Ayer was a member of the Masonic lodge and was but recently advanced to the Knight Templar degree. The burial, which was in Fairmount cemetery, was in charge of the Masonic order.

It is enough to say of Mr. Ayer's life that he was successful, honest, and respected.
