G.C. Sackett, resides 2nd 2, Grand River Township. Born Ohio Dec 29, 1835, son of Cassander & Henrietta (Beech) Sackett. In 1849 his parents came to Denmark, Iowa but have moved several times. He enlisted July 31, 1861, Co.C, 1st Iowa Cavalry, took part in several engagements and lost an eye. Discharged Sept 1864. To Grand River Township in spring of 1870 and owns 50 acres improved land, fine residence, 130 tree orchard engaged in farming and stock raising. Married Nov 6, 1867 to Emma A., daughter of Alvin & Caroline A.(Clark) Duncan. Has 5 children: Frank A., Carrie E., Anna E., Ida F., & Erwin G. Mrs S. a member of Congregational church. In politics Mr. S. is a Republican, has held office of constable & trustee and is a member of the G.A.R.

1. Mr. Sackett was wounded 04 Apr 1864 under right eye by a minnie ball - for 30 years 8 months and 9 days he carried this leaden missile but eventually it gave him so much trouble that he had it removed.

George Cassander Sackett (1922)
George C. Sackett was born in Talmage, Summit County, Ohio, on the 29th day of December, 1835, and passed away at Winterset, Iowa, on April 16th, 1922, aged 86 years, 3 months and 17 days.
The Sackett family is of English descent and it was established in this country many years ago. Three brothers emigrated to America, from England at an early day and Sackett's Harbor on Lake Ontario, in Jefferson county, New York was founded as a village by August Sackett in 1801. It was an important ship building yard and army post during the war of 1812, and is now a thriving city. This August Sackett as one of those three Sackett brothers who came from England.
George C. Sackett, with his parents, removed from Ohio to Iowa in 1849. They settled on a farm near Denmark in Lee county.
When the call to defend the country's flag came in 1861 he was among the first to respond volunteering April 13, 1861, and he mustered into service as a member of Company C, First Iowa Cavalry. He was in continuous active service and participated in various engagements. On the fourth of April 1864 he was wounded under the right eye by a minie ball. For 30 years, 8 months and 9 days he carried that leaden missile but it eventually gave him so much trouble that he had it removed.
On the sixth day of November, 1867, Mr. Sackett was married to Emma A. French and to this union were born five children, Frank A. Sackett of Des Moines, Iowa, Carrie E. Youngblood of Forsythe, Montana, Anna S. Rich, of Sioux City, Iowa, Ida F. Sackett of Des Moines, Erwin G. Sackett who passed away January 17, 1919, at South Range, Wisconsin.
In 1870, Mr. Sackett removed to Adair county, Iowa, and settled on the farm where he continued to reside until March, 1896, when he came with his family to Winterset, Iowa. He was a member of John A. Pitzer Post, No. 55 G. A. R. of Winterset, Iowa. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church having made a confession of faith in November, 1901.
The Pitzer Post G. A. R. and the Woman's Relief Corps attended the funeral which was held in the First Presbyterian Church Tuesday at 2 o'clock and following the sermon by Rev. LeRoy C. Cooley there was the G. A. R. ritual service and interment in the Winterset cemetery.

Death of G. C. Sackett
George C. Sackett died at the Winterset hospital on the afternoon of Easter Sunday. For a year he had been feeble and failed rapidly. Several falls during the past few months had caused weakness, and he was taken to the hospital a week before death came.
Mr. Sackett had passed his 86th birthday and in spite of his infirmities was eager to be active about his home. He was greatly respected and this community loses a revered citizen.
Mr. Sackett was a veteran of the Civil War and a loyal member of Pitzer Post, Grand Army of the Republic.
Mr. and Mrs. Sackett came to Madison county in 1896 from Adair county and have made this town their home ever since. Three daughters and one son, with their mother survive Mr. Sackett.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. LeRoy C. Cooley. The Grand Army comrades gave their impressive service at the church. Interment was in Winterset cemetery.

George W. Hawkins, who served in First Iowa Cavalry in the War of Rebellion settled on Section 1 of Grand River Township in 1869. John W. Perry and George C. Sackett settled on Section 2 in 1870. About the only settlers in the present township at that time were James Bush, Joel Savage, and possibly some of the Bunce brothers, three or four of whom came at the same time.
