Guy Sackett
Guy Sackett passed away at Mineral Falls, Texas, ' last Friday April 9th, where he had gone in the hope of benefiting his health. Although Mr. Sackett has been in very poor health for some time, the news of his death came as a very sever (sic) shock to the people of Marion.
Few men have had a wider or a more sincere circle of friends than were Mr. Sackett's. Unpretentious though he was, he held a place in the hearts of Marion people that, was kept alive by good fellowship, honesty, loyalty and those traits of character which we all strive for and which command our respect in others.
His most intimate friends say he was entirely immune from uttering words of criticism or complaint. He could meet adversity with a smile. He was a worthwhile friend, a kind loving husband and father and a man of unusual ability in his line of work. The large attendance, the many beautiful floral offerings and the sincere and revent (sic) attitude that permeated the atmosphere at the funeral services were ample evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by his fellow townsmen.
Guy Sackett was born in St. Francisville, Missouri, March 14, 1871. He came to Marion with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Sacett (sic), in September 1883 at which place he made his home until the time of his death. He attended the public schools of Marion, spent four years in the University of Kansas and afterwards graduated from the Gem City Business College, at Quincy, Ill.
Following this he was selected by judge Lucien Earl as Court Stenographer of this judicial district, which position he held for about 28 years. He resigned this position last year to make the race for Register of Deeds of Marion County, which office he held at the time of his death. He was an ardent repnblican (sic) and his party selected him for county and congressional chairman and put him in charge of important campaigns and other positions of trust.
He was married to Miss Geneve Battey at Florence, Kansas, in April 1895, who passed to the better land in March 1901. He is survived by two children, Lucien Earle and Mary Josephine and by four sisters, Mrs. Joseph Dickerson, of Edmund, Oklahoma, Mrs. Ezra Cherrington, of St. Joseph, Mo., Mrs. Helen Waterman and Mrs. Anna Blackburn, of Marion.
Funeral services were held at the Sackett home Tuesday morning at 10:30 and were conducted by the Masons. Rev. Ross preached the funeral sermon.
The out of town people who were here for the Sackett funeral were: Earl Sackett, Montana; Mrs. R. T. Batty, Chicago; Mr. Smith, McPherson; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Griffith, and John Griffith, Peabody; Mr. and Mrs. Exra (sic) Cherrington, and two children, St. Joseph, Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dickerson, Edmund, Okla., Mr. V. C. Barnard, Keokuk, Iowa. Orley Billings, Blackwell, Oklahoma, Lenore Miesse, Stafford, Ks., and Mautice Miesse, Denver.
