In the pension file of his father, David Sackett, an affidavit by Q. F. Atkins states: "...in the spring of the year 1820«b» «/b»while serving as Sheriff of the County of Ashtabula, Ohio, I was called upon by a Mr. Church from the State of Massachusetts to go«b» «/b»with him to John Sackets in Pierpoint in the County and State aforesaid to serve a Capias in favor of a brother of the said Church unless he could effect some compromise with Mr. Sacket that should secure the debt - At his request I went to the house of Mr. Sacket and heard the conversation that passed between Church and Sacket - Church proposed to Sacket that if he would Mortgage the farm to his brother that he bought of him, and for which he had paid in part, that he would allow him a year, (if I remember rightly) to pay the amt. due, which was from five to eight hundred dollars - At that time David Sacket, the father of John Sacket was (with his wife and Daughter) living in the house with his son, John..." Therefore, it is evident that John was still living in 1820 in Pierpont, OH although the households of David and John were enumerated separately.

The affidavit by Q. F. Atkins goes on to say that Church eventually possessed the property. In the 1830 census it appears that John Sackett was enumerated in the household of his widowed father:
