R. E. Sackett has Merrill C. as the younger brother of Harvey C. but the census information in 1850 and 1880 shows that Merrill was 3 years older than Harvey. Compare the census info below with that for Merrill's brother, Harvey.

According to John S. Minard's HISTORY OF ALLEGANY COUNTY, p. 610, "... Merrill C., [Sackett] born in Rochester about 1802[sic][b. 1817], learned the carpenters trade of his father and married Sarah E., daughter of Alexander Rice, had 9 children, and died in March, 1886, his wife in October, 1893. Their son, Volney D. Sackett, was born in Whitesville, June 5, 1844. He was a carpenter until Septmeber, 1861, when he enlisted in Co. G, 46th Penn. He was in the battle of Winchester, Aug, 9, 1862, was wounded on the knee at Cedar Mountain, had his leg amputated, was a prisoner in Libby Prison 64 days, paroled and discharged Nov. 7, 1862."
