Births, Deaths, Marriages from Gouverneur, NY Herald
Died. On the evening of March 14, 1875, James Parker, aged 93 years. Mr. Parker was born in Canterbury, Conn., April 1, 1782, and with his only brother - the late John Parker of Fullerville - emigrated to this county April 19, 1805. He subsequently purchased a large tract of land - much of which he cleared with his own hands - erected a comfortable log house, and commenced in earnest a life of usefulness, identifying himself with the prosperity of the place of his adoption, and disbursing liberally to all public benefactions and improvements. In the records of Gouverneur, his name stands high among the projectors of bridges, schools, churches, railroad and cemetery. Of the six trustees elected at the organization of the first Presbyterian or Congregation churches of Gouverneur, Mr. Parker was one, and for many years he sat in council with the sages of the land whenever matters of weight were canvassed. His far-sighted sagacity saw the future of a thriving town and to its welfare all his energies were bent. Like his eminent kinsman - John Quincy Adams - to whom he bore a striking personal likeness - "Right must prevail, even though the wheels of time were blocked to compass it." Mr. Parker was married to Erminince Sackett, January 31, 1819, and was the father of twelve children eight of whom with his widow now survive him. In 1823, he built the brick house in which he lived for nearly fifty years, prepared the material with his own hands, the quality of which has been tested by half a century, and today stands a handsome memorial of its master builder. His rich and handsome farm remained in his possession for sixty-seven years, and only passed from his hands when the proprietor ascended to the better land and entered the heavenly mansions. Of the private life of Mr. Parker little can be said beyond the family circle. His extreme modesty and purity of character were best known there. A man of few words but of more than ordinary intelligence his unsullied record is written upon the family tablet. A life of nearly a century. What events have transpired - what a page of history. Mr. Parker often related the passage of the first steamboat upon the Hudson which he witnessed with the enthusiastic crowd; he saw the rise and fall of many a kingdom and dynasty and watched with jealous eyes the growth of our own republic. But where all is change, the stoutest fabrics must sooner or later crumble to dust. Mr. Parker's disease was consumption; no word of complaint escaped his lips, and without a struggle he passed away, and the places that have known him shall know him no more. His funeral was attended at his late residence on the afternoon of March 17, 1875, and his remains lie in our beautiful cemetery, there to await the final summons.
Awake ye who in Jesus rest
Come home ye righteous, and be blest.
      ------
      James Parker, born Apr 1, 1782, d. Mar 14, 1875 (Section F)
