      Suggested edit: In 1939, Russel was introduced to Irene Maxwell, the daughter of Capt. W. Haines Maxwell when his ship, W.W.Mills was receiving oil. Irene and her girlfriend Norma Townsend (Maxwell) had just graduated from Egg Harbor City High School and her father invited them aboard as a graduation present.

      Russel entered the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a seargent and later promoted a to Lieutenant in command of a tank section of the 8th Armoured Division.

      Funeral services will be held in the Calder Baptist church, probably Saturday afternoon, for Russel LaRue Vernor, 59, of 2437 Pecos boulevard, general manager of the southwest marine division of the Pure Oil company, who died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday in Baptist hospital following a heart attack suffered a week ago. The Rev. Harvey T. Whaley, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery under the direction of the Roberts and Pipkin-Brulin funeral home. Mr. Vernor, a native of Nashville, Ill., had resided in Beaumont since 1923. He had been associated with the Pure Oil company for 38 years. He was superintendent of the Pure Oil company's Smith bluff plant for the first 18 years it was in operation. Mr. Vernor took his first job, at 17 years of age, as a laborer with the Nashville Coal company. The following year, he went to work at the old International refinery at Cushing, Okla., which was later acquired by the Pure Oil company. In 1917, he was named superintendent of the company's refinery at Ardmore, Okla. The next year, construction work started on the Heath refinery at Newark, Ohio, and Mr. Vernor was transferred there as superintendent. He became active head of the Smith Bluff refinery at the age of 28 and later was general manager of that plant. Long active in civic, business and fraternal work, Mr. Vernor was a member of the Beaumont Lions club, the Masonic lodge, Royal Arch and Commandery and Royal and Select Masters, the Odd Fellows, the Knife and Fork club, Beaumont country club, the Trinity-Neches Boy Scout council, the White Heron society, the Sabine-Neches Sportsmen's club and the Propeller club. He was chairman of the board of directors of the First National bank of Port Neches, a past patron of the Eastern Star and a member of the Beaumont and Port Arthur Chambers of Commerce. He was president of the Nederland school board for several years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maude Sackett Vernor of Beaumont; two sons, Russel L. Vernon, Jr., of Jacksonville, Ill. and John Sackett Vernor of Sidney, Nebr.; three brothers, Charles D. Vernor of Nashville, Ill., and Harold S. and Oliver W. Vernor, both of Wood River, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. C.A. Moore of Mesilla Park, N. Mex. and Mrs. Wilbur Frederking of of Houston; three grandchildren, Maurene, Russel L., III, and John Sackett Vernor, Jr. and several nieces and nephews.
