    • Harry McKay was a career navy man entering the service in May 1943 and retiring in October~1970. He started as an Apprentice Seaman and retired as a Lieutenant. All of his career was in aviation and he served aboard several aircraft carriers. Among them was the U.S. S Block Island, CVE 21. On May 29, 1944, this carrier was the only aircraft carrier torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic by a German submarine. The survivors were picked up by their escorts. A second Block Island was buift, CVE 106, and he served aboard that, also, in the Pacific. Their final days in the Pacific, after the war was over, was spent in picking up Japanese prisoners of war and bringing them to Manila for hospital treatment. After retirement, Harryfinished college, worked in the school system for 8 years, then went into flill retirement.

      Harry McKay, Lt., USN (Ret.), age 88, son of Elmer and Christina (Junek) McKay, passed away on July 22, 2012. He was born in Namakagon Township, Bayfield County, Wisconsin. In May 1943, Harry entered the U.S. Navy and he retired in October 1970. He rose from Apprentice Seaman to LT in his 27 years. Serving on several aircraft carriers, his most memorable was the USS Block Island CVE21. This carrier was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in May 1944, the only American carrier sunk in the Atlantic Ocean. The most notable duty station was a 3 year stay in Rota, Spain. After the Navy, Harry earned a BA in Education in June 1977 and a MA in Education in August 1982. After eight years in the school system, Harry resigned and he and his wife began travelling. They travelled to all fifty states and Europe.

      Harry was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruby McKay and Edith Nolan, and one brother, Howard McKay. He is survived by his wife Blanche (Wheeler) McKay, sons Harry McKay, Jr. (Pamela) and Mark McKay (Darlene); daughters Christine Page and Susan Santos (Stuart); seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Harry was a member of Fleet Reserve Branch 126, the American Legion, the VFW, and the Block Island Association.

      Visitation will be 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Chapel, 5753 Blanding Boulevard. Graveside services will be held at Jacksonville Memory Garden, 111 Blanding Boulevard, Orange Park, at 11 am on Friday, July 27, 2012. A Memorial Service will be held Friday evening at 7 pm on July 27, 2012 at the Lakeshore Church of Christ, 1796 Old Middleburg Road North, Jacksonville. Arrangements entrusted to: Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home Blanding Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.

      Funeral services for Blanche Arlene Wheeler McKay, a resident of Jacksonville, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 6th at Lakeshore Church of Christ, 1796 Old Middleburg Rd N, Jacksonville. Burial will be at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd, Orange Park, following the service. Visitation for family and friends is from 6:00 ? 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 5th at Hardage-Giddens Riverside Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd.
      Mrs. McKay passed away Friday, December 29, 2017, at St. Vincent's Medical Center Riverside, Jacksonville. Blanche McKay was born November 27, 1927, in Williamsburg, Virginia, the daughter of Stephen M. and Lillie H. Wheeler. She was the youngest of 12 children, two died in infancy. She was married to Harry McKay, USN Retired, in Jacksonville on July 20, 1946. He preceded her in death July 22, 2012. They were married for 66 years.
      Mrs. McKay was a Navy wife, wonderful mother and grandmother. She worked at Peninsular Fire Insurance in the 1970's ? 1980's until she retired and began traveling with her husband in their motorhome. They went to all fifty states and parts of Europe throughout their traveling years. She wrote and published several books on family genealogy on the Wheeler, Holcombe, Junek and McKay family. She communicated with people throughout the country helping them find their family roots. She loved music, mysteries and needlework but her favorite past time was reading. She always had a book with her and has passed the love of reading to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
      Mrs. McKay was a member of the Lakeshore Church of Christ from the early 1950's. Her favorite verses were Romans 8:31?39 that include the words "If God is for us, who is against us?" She lived her life with generosity of spirit and giving to help others.
      She is survived by her children and their spouses: Harry (Pamela) McKay, Temple Terrace, FL, Christine Page, Auburndale, FL, Susan (Stuart) Santos, Jacksonville, and Mark (Darlene) McKay, Anderson, SC; 7 grandchildren: Janette (Brandon) McElwain, Tonya (Toby) Vaughan, Joshua (Kelley) Page, Jennifer Hood, Megan (Scott) Zambito, Stuart E. Santos, Shawn (Stephanie) McKay; 5 great-grandchildren: Ashley (Michael) Hutcheson, Austin McElwain, Kella, Benning and Kallie Page; and 2 great-great-grandchildren: Sammy and Serena Hutcheson; 1 sister, Trudy Bowman of Newport News, VA, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
      In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the USO, where Blanche and Harry met in Cheatham Annex, Virginia, after World War II or to a charity of your choice.
