      Before Mr. Hardy was in the 10th Kansas, he served as a Sergeant in Co. D 3rd Kansas Inf. Kansas State Militia and before that he was the Captain of Co. D Frontier Batt. Cav. K.S.M. being one of the survivors of the Marmaton Massacre that occurred on 22 Oct. 1864 in Marmaton, Bourbon county, Kansas.
      Robert's parents were Mary Guthrie and Andrew Hardy. Robert came to Bourbon county, Kansas with his parents and siblings from Illinois sometime between 1860 and 1864, settling in Marmaton township. He was the older brother of Mary, William A., Margaret, Thomas and James. In 1865, Robert married his first wife, Elitha Kimbley, she died not long after giving birth to their only child, William Ashbury Hardy in 1866. Robert then left his son to be raised by his parents in Kansas. He was living with the Bussell family in Trinity county, California in 1880 and his occupation was, gold miner. Robert married Sarah Jane Bussell that same year, they had two daughters, Elizabeth/Isabelle who married Joseph Chase, and Sarah Jane who married Robert B. Mathews. After he became an adult, William moved to California to be near his father and sisters, he died unmarried.
