Sheldon Sackett MacLeod, world traveler, artistic leader - obituary

Saturday, January 03, 2009
Grant Segall
Plain Dealer Reporter

Orange- Sheldon Sackett MacLeod, who died Sunday, flew around the world twice in the 1970s, once via the poles and once the equator.

Each trip took three days, with brief stops to refuel and stretch.

The fun-loving, outgoing MacLeod was a travel agent, an Orange council man and a leader of many musical and cultural organizations. He spoke five languages and had visited more than 100 countries.

MacLeod died at the Greens Adult Living Communities of Lyndhurst of complications of liver cancer. He was 80.
He was born in Providence, R.I., and graduated from Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts and Princeton University in New Jersey. He spent two years in the Army after World War II.

He worked several years in accounting and marketing for General Electric. He transferred to GE's Nela Park in East Cleveland and married a colleague, Marilyn Jean Crosby, in 1953.

The couple changed fields in 1959, opening Your Travel Agent Inc. in Maple Heights. MacLeod sold the agency and retired in 1990.

That year, the Orange council appointed him to a vacancy. He helped pass an early law requiring helmets for young bicyclists. But he declined to run for election.

"I'm politic, but I'm not a politician," he said.

MacLeod found plenty of other ways to keep busy. He and Marilyn co-sponsored radio broadcasts of what became the Cleveland International Piano Competition. He was a board member and Volunteer of the Year for the Western Reserve Historical Society.

He also helped lead Cleveland Opera, Apollo's Fire, the Singers' Club of Cleveland and more.

His hobbies included genealogy, birds, hiking, climbing, camping, canoeing, surfing, diving, and reading and writing poetry.
