Colfax Record (Colfax, California), 9 May 1952, Page 1 John McCleary Passes Away Funeral services were held in the Francis E. West Chapel here Tuesday afternoon for John B. McCleary, well known former garage man and automobile dealer who died in the Southern Pacific Hospital in San Francisco, on Saturday, May 3. 1952. He had been i11 for the past year or more and was in the hospital prior to his passing for more than two months. The deceased was a native of Colfax and had lived here all of his life. As a young man he assisted his father in the operation of a livery stable and in 1914 he opened the McCleary Garage which he operated until 1944 when he retired from business. Later he entered the employ of the Southern Pacific Company here. He served as constable of Township No. 13 for nine years resigning from that office three years ago. He was the second oldest living retired member of the the Colfax Volunteer Fire Department. He was born in Colfax, May 31, 1885. In connection with his garage In the early days McCleary was the local Ford Dealer and his garage was known far and wide. John B. McCleary was married to Etta Alice Sackett of Truckee, who with their three children survive. The deceased was an outstanding citizen of Colfax and a man of high character. He had many friends throughout the area, who, with his family, will miss him and who are saddened at his passing. He was always active in civic affairs and was one of the charter members of the Colfax Lions Club. John B. McCleary was a member of Illinoistown Lodge No. 51, F. & A. M. of Colfax; Siloam Chapter No. 37, R. A. M.; Gateway Council No. 13. R. & S. M., of Auburn; Nevada Commandery No. 6, Knights Templar of Grass Valley; Scottish Rite Masons and Ben All Shrine of Sacramento. John McCleary was for several years a member of the Republican County Central Committee. The funeral services were conducted by Illinoistown Lodge No. 51, F. & A. M. with C. W. Manuel acting as Worshipful Master followed by Dr. Russell F. Judson of the Colfax Community Church. Mrs. Ardis O'Neal sang, "Abide With Me," and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." Pallbearers were: H. D. Pounds, Walter Viscia, Bert Young, Perley Moses, Larry Hewer and Jack Williams. The chapel was filled to capacity with the many friends or the deceased who came to pay their final respects to his memory. In his passing the people of Colfax have lost a real friend. This writer had known John McCleary for some thirty years and we always found him friendly and the kind of a man who makes friends and keeps them. Our sincere sympathy to those who mourn his passing. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Etta McCleary; two sons, John B. of Cebu, Philippine Islands and Major William J. McCleary of the Army Air Force and a daughter, Mrs. Katherlne Elliott of Culver City; two sisters. Mrs. Edna McLeod of Colfax and Mrs. Virginia M. Dean of Glendale and seven grand children. McCleary Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lassila Sierra Chapel for Etta A. McCleary, 98, of Colfax, who died Wednesday at an Auburn convalescent hospital. Mrs. McCleary was a native of Colusa. She was a housewife, a member of Bethany Chapter No. 49, Order of the Eastern Star, the Sorptomist (sic) Club of Colfax, the Colfax United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge of Colfax. McCleary is survived by two sons, John McCleary, of Colfax and William J. McCleary of Columbia; a daughter, Katheryn Elliott of Dana Point; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
