      Services Set Today For Pringle Smith

      Funeral Service of John Julius Pringle Smith, 82, of 21 East Battery, owner and restorer of Middleton Gardens, will be held at noon Tuesday at St. Philip's Protestant Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Connelley's.

      Mr. Smith, son of the late U.S. District Judge Henry Augustus Middleton Smith and Emma Rutledge Smith, inherited Middleton Gardens and Middleton Place on-the-Ashley in 1914. He was a direct descendant of Henry Middleton, president of the First Continental Congress and creator of the gardens in 1741.

      Mr. Smith and his wife, the late Henningham Lyons Elliet Smith, began restoration of the plantation house and gardens in 1923 and spent some 15 years in restoring the estate to its original beauty.

      In 1941, the Garden Club of America presented its highest award, the Bulkley Medal, to Middleton Gardens and cited the Smiths for their "great devotion to the garden."

      Mr. Smith died Sunday at a local hospital.

      Surviving are: one grandson, Charles H. P. Duell of Charleston; two granddaughters, Dr. Anne D. Morgan of Denver, Colo., and Miss Josephine Scott Duell of Bridgeport, Conn.; and two great-grandchildren
