Lillian Gish Denies Rumor

Durell Was Recently Divorced
NEW YORK, Feb 16.--Lillian Gish, motion picture actress, who recently was reported engaged to Charles H. Duell, has denied and engagement or impending marriage, according to friends who today made public cables received from Miss Gish in Italy.
Mr. Duell, whose wife recently was grated a divorce in in Paris, formerly was treasurer of the New York state Republican committee and chairman of the finance committee.
Because Mrs. Charles Duell, wife of Charles Duell of Inspiration pictures, obtained a divorce, a rumor said that Mr. Duell was soon to wed Lillian Gish, film actress. Miss Gish acts with Mr. Duell's company. The entire company with Duell, is in Europe making pictures.

Produce Grilled on Gish Contract
[The news article recounts that "Charles H. Duell, motion picture producer" testified regarding a contract he had with Lillian Gish. Duell's company, Charles H. Duell, Inc., bought assets of Inspiration Pictures, Inc., including Gish's assigned contract. Duell then attempted to obtain a bank loan of $50,000 to begin filming, but the bank refused unless Gish signed a release, which he obtained. The article does not address the outcome, but does include some interesting tidbits:
"Before the cross-examination Mr. Duell was examined further by his counsel, Colonel Holland Duell, about his engagement to miss Gish. He was asked if he had ever announced the engagement to Miss Gish's mother.
"'In June, 1923,' said the witness, 'we--Miss Gish and I--went to Mrs. Gish and told her that my wife and I were going to get a divorce and that after that Miss Gish and I intended to get married.'
"Yesterday Mr. Duell testified that the engagement was broken by mutual consent in April 1924."
Note: Other articles, including some in Spanish, recount the trial proceedings. The April 2, 1925 San Diego Evening Tribune reported that the judge dismissed the suit against Gish and charged Charles H. Duell with perjury, setting bail at $10,000, then releasing him to the custody of his brother, Holland.

Charles H. Duell Weds California Girl
Miss Lillian Tucker Becomes Bride of Treasurer of New York Republicans
Date: Sunday, October 30, 1921
Paper: Philadelphia Inquirer (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
Volume: 185
Issue: 122

A wedding of more than unusual interest to members of New York and Philadelphia society took place yesterday afternoon when Miss Lillian Tucker of California became the bride of Charles Holland Duell of New York. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Alvin Bird of the Abington Presbyterian Church at the home of William Sackett Duell, brother of the groom, at Meadowbrook.
Mr. Duell is widely-known in social and political circles and is the author of several books. He is a treasurer of the New York State Republican Committee, and was a close friend of the late Colonel Roosevelt. Mrs. Duell is a dramatic actress of considerable note, having recently starred with the Chicago company in "Three Faces East." Artists and sculptors in the country and abroad considered the former Miss Tucker as the "typical Greek goddess" type of beauty.
A special train brought guests from New York to the wedding, and society folks from other cities attended. An orchestra furnished the music, and before the bride and groom departed for Hot Springs, Va., a dance was given for the guests.
The country home of Mr. Duell's brother is one of the oldest colonial homes in Pennsylvania and was attractively decorated with autumn flowers.
