      Moses Shepard
      Moses Shepard served in Co. C, 9th Michigan Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted for three years at the age of thirty on September 6, 1861, at Jackson, Michigan. He was mustered in on October 15, 1861, and discharged for disability at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on May 20, 1863.
      The 9th Michigan Infantry was organized at Fort Wayne, Michigan, and was mustered into service on October 15, 1861. The regiment was mustered out on September 15, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee, and arrived in Jackson, Michigan, where the men were paid and disbanded.
      Moses Shepard was born on August 14, 1829, in New York, the son of Silas Shepard. His wife, Rachel, was born about 1844 in Washtenaw County, Michigan, the daughter of Samuel and Locia (Hitchcock) Foreng. In 1870 and 1880, the Shepard family lived at York in Washtenaw County, Michigan. By 1890 they had settled in Orange Township, Kalkaska County, Michigan. They were the parents of Minerva, Alida, Moses D., Denison, Fred, and Lewis Shepard.
      Minerva Shepard was born about 1858 in Michigan.
      Alida Shepard was born December 15, 1867, at York, Washtenaw County, Michigan. She married Knight Richardson on August 11, 1890, in Orange Township, Kalkaska County. Knight was born about 1856 in Michigan to William and Eliza F. (Knight) Richardson. In 1920, the Richardson family lived in Los Angeles, California, where Knight worked in a ship yard. Their daughter, Meda Konkoe, and her two sons lived with them as well as their daughter and son, Bernice and Orla. (See the William Richardson family story.)
      Moses D. Shepard was born on June 24, 1871, at York, Washtenaw County, Michigan.
      Dennis L. Shepard was born in June 1872 in Michigan. He married Lottie Blodgett on December 23, 1893, at Lodi in Kalkaska County. Lottie was born in October 1874 in Michigan, the daughter of Joseph Blodgett. In 1900, Dennis and Lottie lived in Orange Township, Kalkaska County. They had two children, Leila, born in April 1895, and Ivan, born in September 1897.
      Fred Shepard was born about 1874 in Michigan. He married Lottie Stoops on September 25, 1901, at Kalkaska. Lottie was born about 1877, the daughter of Phillip Stoops. Fred and Lottie lived in Orange Township, Kalkaska County. Children known born to them were Elta, Ethel, Raymond, and Howard.
      Lewis Shepard was born on July 26, 1878, at York, Washtenaw County, Michigan. He married Alma Hoag on December 16, 1900, in Orange Township, Kalkaska County. Elma was born about 1882 in Michigan to Menzo and Jane (Fletcher) Hoag. In 1910, Lewis and Alma lived in Orange Township, Kalkaska County, with children Leonard W., Jennie and Leona. In 1930, they lived in the village of Kalkaska.
      Mrs. Rachel Shepard died on April 15, 1899, in Orange Township, Kalkaska County.
      Civil War veteran Moses Shepard died on April 2, 1908, in Orange Township. Moses and Rachel Shepard are buried in the Orange Township Cemetery in Kalkaska County, Michigan. Mr. Shepard's grave is marked by a Civil War military headstone and a G.A.R. flag holder.
