      The Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Vassar

      Elizabeth, N.J., July 3.-- The Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Vassar, descendant of the founder of Vassar College and a nephew of John Vassar, the noted evangelist, is dead at home, 146 Madison Ave. He was pastor of the Second Baptist Church here.

      Dr. Vassar was born in Poughkeepsie eighty-four years ago, and was ordained on Jan. 19, 1837, in the First Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie. On Jan. 27, 1907, he celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination in the ministry of South Baptist Church, Newark, and on Oct. 7, 1911, he celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his wedding. He was author of the book, "Uncle John Vassar," and during the civil war served as chaplain in the army.
