Duane, was a handsome and talented person. He had light brown hair, brown eyes, and a nice rosy complexion. He had a beautiful singing voice, as did his sister Ellen Rising Rose. He owned a large farm on South Longyard street, Southwick, MA., and was a selfsytled "gentleman farmer". That is, he hired all the hard work done, but he knew all the
aspects of good farming so could manage well, and loved raising and driving fine horses.

He had a fine team of matched blacks, Ned and Dan and Prince and Dandy, and an old friend of the family told me how, as a little girl, she used to envy . my mother and aunt as they drove up to the Baptist Church on a Sunday, in their lovely, white dresses, and their fine carriage with
those coal-black horses. My mother was only 7 when she left the farm, but she always loved it and told about reading or playing dolls under the
grape arbors or up in the cherry and apple trees. She also liked to hitch up the horses, but Edith was afraid of them. Later in life, however , Duane became a tragic figure. He got to drinking so badly that, at the age of 47 and after nearly 30 years of marriage, my grandmother left him with their 2 little girls, then 7 and 10 years old. The day they drove off in her father's carriage for his home in Westfield, Duane stood in the driveway weaving drunk as a lord, waving and shouting, "good-bye babies " . Then he went in the house and committed suicide by taking poison. He is buried in the Southwick Cemetery. My grandmother sold the farm. The new owner permitted her to store her furniture in the attic, then he set fire to it later for the insurance. so everything went up in smoke. She lost many fine antiques, including a rosewood piano and several spinning wheels. She spent the remainder of her life, first with her parents, the Marvins; later, with her daughters, in Westfield .
