      176. JOHN5 SACKETT (Phebe4 Burling, James3, Edward2, Edward1, EdwardA), the son of Phebe (Burling) and John Sackett, was born S April 1747 and died in 1811. The family lived in Cornwall, Orange County, New York.

He and wife (1) POLLY ___ were married, say, 1774, shortly before the birth of their eldest child. John married (2) JANE __ about 1796, when their first child was born, or a little earlier. Polly died sometime after 1790 (birth of her last child) and before, say, 1795. Jane died after 1811, when she was executor (with son Nathaniel) for her husband's will.

The will was written 25 September 1810 and proved 20 June 1811. John Sackett, Town of Cornwall, yeoman . . ." He named his wife, Jane; plus sons and daughters and their husbands. They were sons Nathaniel, Benjamin, Justus, and John Jr.; daughters Elisabeth, wife of Robert Wigham Jr., Mary, wife of William Ketcham, plus unmarried daughters Sackett: Anne, Julia Ann, and Charity. (These are a mixture of children by first and second wives; the will referred 10 "infant children".)

Some, but not all, of these children, were named in the Sackett genealogy. The Ketcham Bible showed that John's first wife was Polly (not Jane, as had been thought previously from the John Sackett will). These children, including Mary, owner of the Bible, were listed there under John and Polly: Elizabeth, Henry, Mary, John, Nathaniel, Ann, Benjamin, James. Birth dates were given for all but Benjamin and James. These appear to have been entered all at the same time, in the same hand, likely Mary, who owned the Bible. "June the 20th 1840," it says in the front.

A crucial piece of evidence was that of the birth of Benjamin Sackett, "son of John and Jane", born 27 December 1796. This established a time frame for the death of Polly and the marriage to Jane. There is a space of five years between Benjamin, born 1796, and the next sibling, Julia Anne, born 1801; there could have been other pregnancies during those years. The three youngest children, Julia, Justice, and Charity, were found in the 1850 census.

The children of John Sackett and Polly (___):

      409. i. ELIZABETH6 SACKETT was born 21 March 1775.

      410. ii. HENRY SACKETT was born 1 September 1777. Died young.

      411. iii. BENJAMIN SACKETT, born, say, 1778, died young.

      412. iv. JAMES SACKETT, born, say, 1780, died young.

      413. v. MARY SACKETT was born 5 February 1782. She married WILLIAM KETCHAM.

      414. vi. JOHN SACKETT Jr. was born 3 March 1783.

      415. vii. NATHANIEL SACKETT was born 3 July 1787 and died 9 November 1834. He married MARGARET LAZIER. Issue.

      416. viii. ANNE SACKETT was born 3 March 1789. She married ELIJAH HORTON.

The daughters of Phebe (Burling) and John Sackett are found in Phebe's mother's will ("granddaughters Phebe, Sarah, and Elizabeth Sackett") and the Sackett genealogy for Justus and John. Birth dates or order is unknown. It is unlikely the girls were all born first.

The children of Phebe (Burling) and John Sackett:

      173. i. PHEBE5 SACKETT. living in 1784 when mentioned in EGB will.

      174. ii. SARAH SACKETT was living in 1784.

      175. iii. ELIZABETH SACKETT was living in 1784.

      176. iv. JOHN SACKETT married (1) POLLY ___ and (2) JANE ___.

      177. v. JUSTUS SACKETT.
