      Donald McLean, was president of Lahey Clinic, Phillips trustees

      ANDOVER - Donald H. McLean Jr. of Andover, former president of the board of trustees at Phillips Academy and former president of Lahey Clinic, died Wednesday in Lahey Clinic. He was 73.

      A memorial service will be conducted in Cochran Chapel of Phillips Academy. Andover. on Sunday at 2 p.m.

      He was president of the Lahey Clinic for a decade, until 1975, and led the Phillips Academy trustees from 1968 to 1981.

      Born In Elizabeth, N.J.. he graduated from Phillips Academy, Amherst College and Yale Law School. In 1977, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Amherst for his work In education and philanthropy. He served in the Army during World War II.

      In 1952 he became a special associate of John D. Rockefeller 3d, developing cultural and educational programs in Japan and southeast Asia under the terms of the peace treaty between the United States and Japan. He was instrumental in formation of the Agricultural Development Council, the population council in the International House of Japan and the International Center in New Delhi, and the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation in Manila.

      In 1965 he became president of the Lahey Clinic Foundation in Boston and in the next 10 years reorganized its structure and directed its relocation to Burlington.

      As a charter trustee at Phillips Academy in 1958 he led a campaign to raise $6,060,000. the largest goal ever set by a secondary school up to that time. During his tenure as president of the board, the school became coeducational, celebrated its bicentennial and raised $50,610,000.

      After graduation, from law school, he served with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, a New Deal agency, and later joined the New York law firm of Mill-bank, Tweed & Hope, where he practiced until 1942.

      During much of his lifetime he and his family lived in Summit, N.J.. where he was active in civic affairs, particularly as president of the board of trustees of Overlook Hospital. He also played an important role in the reorganization of The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

      He served on visiting committees for the Harvard School of Public Administration (then the Littauer School) and the Harvard Business School. In addition he was a trustee of Massachusetts Financial Services from 1975 until 1982.

      He leaves his wife, Martha (Lamb); and four children, Donald H. 3d of Denver, Colo., Ruth Lizotte of Silverton, Ore., John A. of Yarmouth, Maine, and Barbara O'Neil of Lincoln; a brother, Edward R. of Greenville, Del.; and eight grandchildren.

      Former Rep. McLean Of New Jersey Dies

      NORTH HERO - Donald R. McLean, a former member of the U.S. C6ngress, of Elizabeth, N.J., and North Hero, died at the Fanny Allen Hospital, Colchester, early Tuesday morning.

      A graduate of George Washington Law School in Washington, D.C.. he was active in law and politics until his retirement at the age of 84.

      McLean served six consecutive terms in the House of Representatives from New Jersey after his election in 1932. He resigned to accept an appointment as Union County prosecutor and in 1945, was named to a judgeship on the former Court of Errors and Appeals, which subsequently became the Superior Court.

      He left the bench to resume his law practice in 1954 and retired seven years ago.

      He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Elizabeth. N.J.. and was a founder of the Elizabeth Rotary Club. He was born in 1884 in Paterson.N J.

      He married Edna Righter in 1909; she died in 1969.

      He married Clare Bitzer in 1971.

      He leaves his wife. Clare; two sons, Donald R. McLean, president of the Lahey Clinic in Boston, and Edward R. McLean of Wilmington, Del.; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

      A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Elizabeth. N.J. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
