ROCKY HILL ? Helen Louise (Young) Calvo, 93, of Rocky Hill, passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2009.
Born June 17, 1916, in Greene County, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Homer and Florence (Sackett) Young. Helen graduated from Springfield, Mo., High School, a member of the National Honor Society, and then graduated from Draughon's Business University, a member of Alpha lota, its honor society. Before her retirement, Helen was employed by Social Security, Baltimore, Md., the U.S. Navy Department, Washington, D.C. the Army Signal Corps, Philadelphia, Pa., and the Veteran's Administration in Hartford.
Helen was predeceased by her devoted husband of 63 years, Anthony, who died Dec. 18, 2004. They met at the U.S. Navy Department in Washington, D.C., where both were employed, and were married April 5, 1941, at the National City Christian Church, Washington, D.C. Helen and Tony loved to travel and enjoyed some lovely trips to Europe, Great Britain and the Scandinavian countries. Helen enjoyed writing rhyming poetry and many of her poems were published.
Helen leaves her loving daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Richard Powalka of North Granby, Conn. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Lena Bosco of Prospect, Conn., and Nancy Calvo of Monroe, Conn., along with many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Rocky Hill Congregational Church, 805 Old Main St., Rocky Hill, on Wednesday, July 8, at 11 a.m. A reception will immediately follow at the church in Chapin Hall. Burial in Center Cemetery, Rocky Hill, will be at the convenience of the family.
Donations in Helen's name may be made to the Rocky Hill Congregational Church, 805 Old Main St., Rocky Hill, CT; or Rocky Hill Historical Society, 785 Old Main St., Rocky Hill, CT 06067.

HOMER A YOUNG
Homer A. Young, 74, Route 12, was dead on arrival at Springfield Baptist Hospital at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Mr. Young, who had been ill for about six weeks, was found in a tool shed on his property after he failed to return home, and he was believed to have suffered a heart attack. Sheriff's deputies said death was apparently due to natural causes.
A retired dairyman and farmer, Mr. Young had lived in Greene County most of his life. Survivors are his wife, Florence; two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Boals, Kansas City, and Mrs. Helen Caivo, Rocky Hill, Conn.; a brother, Hubert, Seaside, Calif.; and a grandchild.
Arrangements will be announced by Ralph Thieme.

MRS. RUBY YOUNG BOALS
Mrs. Ruby Young Boals, 53, a native of Greene County who lived in Kansas City the past 18 years, died at her home there Tuesday after a sudden illness.
Mrs. Boals attended public schools in Springfield before moving to Kansas City, where she was employed as a bookkeeper for a law firm.
Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Homer Young, Route 12, and one sister, Mrs. Helen Calvo, Rocky Hill, Conn.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Gorman-Scharpf Chapel with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery.
