Mildred H. Coene, 108, a resident of Rochester most of her life, presently a resident of the Franciscan Manor for the past six years, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 12, 2014, in the Good Samaritan Hospice, Heritage Valley Beaver.
Born August 4, 1905, in Rochester, she was the only child to the late George A. and Nellie Bowers Howe. She was a member of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rochester, where she belonged to the Women's Bible Study Class and the Elizabeth Circle. She was employed by the former Carver Insurance Agency of Beaver in 1947 and in 1950 she worked in the offices of Drs. Whitehall, Patrick and Taylor. In 1960 Mildred was appointed to fill the unexpired term of her late husband as Rochester Borough Tax Collector, she was then elected to three terms of office and retired in 1975 at the age of 70. She was a 1925 graduate of Rochester High School and then attended Garfield Business School, which was then located in Rochester. She was an employee of the former Freedom Oil Works and on lunch breaks, she and other female employees learned to play bridge. Mildred enjoyed the game and continued to play it throughout her life and as recently as this past year, she still belonged to a bridge club. In addition to her love of bridge, she loved to travel. She had been through the United States, Canada, Europe, the Orient, the Holy Land and Egypt. As a young married woman, she was a member and past president of the Junior Women's Club, which was the first group to transfer to the Senior Club at the age of 30. She helped to organize a child study club and was a charter member of the Charlie's Angels Dance and Exercise Group of New Brighton. All in all, she was a pretty amazing woman and mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband whom she married in 1928, Henry Theodore Coene, who passed away in 1960. She was also preceded in death by a grandchild, Susan Coene, in 2013, and a former daughter-in-law, Louise Coene.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, George T. and Andrea Coene, Redondo Beach, CA; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marjorie C. and Frank D'Amico, Beaver, and Carol J. Reynolds, Patterson Twp.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received Thursday, February 20, 2014, from 12 noon to 3 p.m. in the WILLIAM MURPHY FUNERAL HOME INC., 349 Adams St., Rochester. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rochester. Her pastor, the Rev. Gregory S. Clagg, will officiate.
