      Cyrus Thomas' Life Statement
      Posted 10 Nov 2010 by raypotts491

In 1905 Cyrus Thomas wrote an autobiographical life statement. It was written out on several sheets of paper. The statement eventually made it to Myrtle Thomas who was one of Cyrus' grand-daughters's. Myrtle was my grandmother's sister (my great aunt) and gave me a photocopy of the statement in the mid 1980's. Myrtle died in about 1993 at the age of 106. I never found out what happened to the original document but assume that one of her more direct descendants inherited it. Following is my transcription of the statement including Cyrus' grammatical and spelling errors.

great great grandson of Cyrus Thomas

      A. D. 1905

Born in Dark Co., Ohio January 13th 1830 son of Charles W. and Mercy Thomas was one of nine children of three of us brothers yet are now living Cyrus, David and Absolam. Cyrus lives at Winchester, Ind. David lives in Holan's Bridg, Dark, Ohio Absolam at Kirkman, Shelby Co. Iowa. Of the 5 sisters Mary Ann Lamb and Nancy Mutchner and Pheby York and Aner Newhous has past away yet there is one sister yet living. Sarah J. Slates lives in Kirkman Shelby co, Iowa. At the time of my birth this county was a premevole forest and my bro. G. S. Thomas and I helped our father clear the farm and til the land. My school opertunity was very limited yet I am so I can read and rite and good enuff to anser for all my perpuses. I take lots of plasure in reading over newspapers and instructive books. At the age of 19 years I left my home to lern a trade at Fountain City, Ind. with Harvy Davis a cabinet maker then at Winchester Randolph Co. Ind. then at Richmond, Ind. then at Palestine. Thare married Delila Weaver. Went to house keaping. Lived thare bout a year then moved to Illinois near Rockisland. In this marage there was to us 3 children. Emma F. and Charles I. and Lewis A. Thomas. Then the war with the South was on and I volenterd in the 37 infintry Reg. and was in several engagements. Stad til the close of the war and was discharged at Galvestin, Texas than went to my home and a happy time with my children. My wife in that time left I and her children to get along the best we could. So I took my children back to Ohio and worked at the cabinet trad and in 1868 I maried the second time to Fanny Shafer and to us was born to children, twins Caroline and Mary Eliszibeth Barker. Caroline lives with me yet. Elizibeth Barker livs in Farland Ind. In 1895 my dear pardner for life past a way. It is a grate trye for us to part with our frends yet agane I maried the third time about three years after my pardners deth to Mrs. Emily Likens wido of Andrew Likens. We are a passing our life plesantly together about 15 years past. I joined the Friends Quaker's Church and my wife is a member of the same church and daughter Caroline Thomas. Daughter Eliszabeth Barker is a member of the Cristian Church at Farm land Ind. I am now 75 years. I feal that my rase is nearly run. I hope to meat my dear friends in a better world. This is Cyrus Thomas' one statement. When I am gon my family probably will make some changes.

6/30/1910 married Catherin Bolin of Fulton Co. Cisco, Ind.

      12/26/1910 Died of heart failure.

The last two lines were added as noted in 1910. The handwriting looked similar to that in the rest of the document and as a result, I first thought they were written by Cyrus and indicated that Catherin Bolin died on 12/26/1910. Now I believe the two lines were written by someone other than Cyrus and indicate that Cyrus died on 12/26/1910. I was unable to find any official record of Cyrus' death but I was able to locate one for Catherin Bolin Thomas'. According to the record she died in 1920.
