      John was born in Lenk im Simmental, Bern, Switzerland. He was christened on December 14, 1806, son of Christian and Catharina [Tritten]. He was one of nine children. In 1834, he immigrated with his father and four of his siblings to America. The family immediately settled in what is now Delta, Fulton Co., Ohio. John married Harriet Williams (dau. of David Williams of Swan Creek Twp.) about 1838 and fathered two sons and a daughter. He was naturalized a U.S. citizen in November of 1852, five months before his death at "46 years 3 months 22 days," his age on a transcription of his grave, compiled by Harriet Cole Bowen in 1944.
