James Post Hubert
Birth: Aug. 15, 1911; Babylon, Suffolk County, New York, USA
Death: Oct. 29, 2008; Glens Falls, Warren County, New York, USA
Glens Falls -- James Post Hubert passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at his home in Glens Falls at age 97. He was born on Aug. 15, 1911, in Babylon, N.Y., the first of seven children born to parents Philip Arthur Hubert and Helen Post Hubert of Park Slope, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Brookhaven, N.Y. His grandfathers were James H. Post, philanthropist and founder of the National Sugar Refining Co., and Philip G. Hubert, a well-known columnist, music critic and author. After graduating from Poly Prep in Brooklyn, he attended Amherst and Rollins colleges, graduating with a degree in music. During the 1930s, he lived in Brooklyn and worked for First National City Bank, New York Central Railroad and Standard Oil Co. He enlisted for WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a bomber radio operator. He married Doras Downey of Montclair, N.J., in Roswell, N.M., on March 25, 1943, and in 1946, they moved to Hackettstown, N.J., where he was the president of the Dual Leather Co. He built a home for his growing family entirely unassisted in nearby Independence Township. In 1958, he sold his company and received his master's degree in education from Newark State Teachers College (Kean University) and became a schoolteacher in Long Valley, N.J., where he taught English until 1965. Subsequently, he taught at The Peck School in Morristown, N.J. He had a lifelong love of children and was active as a tutor and a Sunday school teacher his entire life. Doras and Jim moved to Blackberry Lane in Morris Township, N.J., in 1958, where they remained for 31 years. In 1989, they moved to North Road, Glens Falls, N.Y. Mr. Hubert was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls and particularly enjoyed his activities with the men's group. From 1995 to 2005, Doras and Jim spent winters in their home in Naples, Fla. James Hubert was a man of varied interests and activities. A prolific photographer, he developed his own photographic prints until making the switch to digital photography. Jim combined this with an interest in steam railroads, and some of his railroad related photos were published. An active collector of stamps, coins, and maps, Jim was also an excellent piano player with a special appreciation of classical music. Traveling extensively, he took the family on multiple extended trips throughout the U.S. and Europe. He was an accomplished tennis player into his '70s and attended Wimbledon for more than 20 years. Jim enjoyed ice-skating and taught many through his skill, patience and encouragement. Proficient in multiple languages, for a time he tutored newly arrived immigrants in English. Jim was also a very active reader and kept up with the latest technology right up until the last week of his life. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doras Hubert, of Glens Falls; his four children, William P. Hubert and his wife, Kathryn, of Glens Falls and granchildren Devon L. Hubert and Blythe P. Hubert; Richard P. Hubert and his wife, Barbara, of Dove Canyon, Calif., and granchildren Jeffrey P. Hubert, Patrick R. Hubert and Laura M. Hubert.; James P. Hubert Jr. and his wife, Ruth, of Franklin, Mass., and granchildren Emily H. Hahn and Jennifer M. Hubert; Priscilla H. Grover and her husband, Philip, of Corinth, Vt., and granchildren Elisabeth W. Grover, Rebecca M. Grover and Michael H. Grover and his sister Dorothy H. Jones, of Patchogue, N.Y. His sisters, Helen Torrey, Elisabeth Hansen, Louise Guptill and Ann Carey and his brother, Phillip Hubert predeceased him. Visiting hours will take place Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 29, at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Glens Falls. Interment will be in the Woodland Cemetery in Bellport, N.Y., at a time convenient to the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Post-Morrow Foundation, P.O. Box 204, Brookhaven, NY 11719.
