Woman Succombs
In Cheyenne, Wyo.
Mrs. Andy Stephens recently received the sad word of the death of her mother, Mrs. Hattie J. Ayer, at the home of Mrs Phebe Pickett, another daughter, who lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Mrs. Ayer had been in her usual health but passed away Sunday morning May 24th., while sitting in her chari and physicians said that death was due to heart failure. Her husband, C. E. Ayer, preceeded her in death.
Hattie J. Ayer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, «b»January 4, 1860«/b». She came to Northwestern Colorado with her husband in 1888 where they homesteaded land just south of the Wyoming line. They developed this homestead into a fine ranch which became known over the entire Northwest for its hospitality. This property was formerly known as the Bar L7 ranch and was sold in 1919 to the Riley Livestock compahy.
She leaves to mourn her death, three daughters, Pheobe A. Pickett, of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Arleine Snyder, Nampa, Idaho; Gertrude A. Stephens, Craig and two sons, Lawrence C. Ayer, Fort Morgan, and Walter D. Ayer of Long Beach, California.
Mrs. Stephens drove to Cheyenne and from there to Dinver where internent was made in Fairview cemetery.
[Note: There are conflicting dates for Hattie's birth and death. This census dated 11 Jun 1900 gives birth as Jan. 1861 and her age as 39 on her last birthday. Her obituary gives her birth as January 4, 1869. Her headstone gives her birth as 1859. For her death the headstone has 1932. There is a hand date "5-31-1933"written on the newspaper article conderning her death. The article says that she died on Sunday, May 24 but the 24th was on Wednesday in 1933. May 24, 1932 was on Tuesday while May 24, 1931 was on Sunday.]

Rawlins Republican, 18 Aug 1921
C. E. Ayer
Mr. C. E. Ayer was born in Erie County, New York, March 29th, 1856 and was therefore 65 years, 4 months and 13 days of age at the time of his death. When a child, Mr. Ayer moved with his parents from New York state to Minnesota and a few years later immigrated from there to Muscotah, Kansas, where he grew to manhood. He was a blacksmith by trade and served two years as sheriff of Decatur County when that county was first organized in western Kansas.
On February 6, 1884, he was married to Hattie J. Viles of Muscotah. Kansas, who survives him and lives at the family home, 296 South Ogden street, Denver, Colorado. To this union were born fife children: two sons, Lawrence C., who lives at Battle Creek, Colorado; Walter D., who is at home; Mrs. M. E. Pickett, of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Mrs. J. H. Hoffman, of Boise, Idaho; and Mrs. H. D. Egner of Longmont, Colorado.
In 1888, Mr. Ayer moved with his family to a homestead on Willow Creek in Colorado where by the grit and industry possessed only by the western pioneer he overcame every obstacle and developed one of the best ranch and cattle business in the Snake River Valley. Two years ago he sold this property to C. M. Thompson and moved to Denver, where he died.
Mr. Ayer was a member of the Masonic lodge and was but recently advanced to the Knight Templar degree. The burial, which was in Fairmount cemetery, was in charge of the Masonic order.
It is enough to say of Mr. Ayer's life that he was successful, honest, and respected.
