DIAMOND GROVE CEMETERY OBITUARIES
WISWELL, GEORGE T.
Jacksonville Daily Journal, Sept. 10, 1918
GEORGE T. WISWELL DIED THIS MORNING
Well Known Resident Passed
Away After Long Illness - Was
Pioneer Resident of County
George T. Wiswell pioneer resident of Morgan county, died at his home, 842 West North street, at 1:50 o'clock this (Tuesday) morning after an illness of more than a year. His fatal illness covered a period of but six weeks.
Deceased was born in Columbus, Ohio, 75 years ago and came to Illinois with his parents when four years of age. They settled in Morgan county and his home has since been in this county and city.
For many years he followed the occupation of farming and was accounted most successful in that occupation. He first purchased the John Stice farm one and one-half miles west of Prentice. This was in 1878 just after his marriage.
A few years afterward he sold that farm and purchased the Hardin Cox farm. He sold that farm and purchased the William Kennedy farm south of Waverly, which he farmed until about 14 years ago. He then retired from active farm work and moved to Jacksonville.
Mr. Wiswell was united in marriage in 1878 to Miss Mary Ellen Hubbs, who survives him together with the following children, Earl B. Wiswell, Mrs. Bertha M. Sturgeon and Miss Georgia May and Miss Lura Vey Wiswell, all of this city.
After moving to Jacksonville Mr. Wiswell engaged in the real estate business, the firm name being G. T. Wiswell and Son. His long years of farming were a great help to him in his work and the firm has negotiated some of the largest real estate deals recorded in the county in recent years.
In 1883 Mr. Wiswell became a member of the Baptist church and he has always been actively interested in the work of that denomination. When he removed to Jacksonville he transferred his membership to First Baptist Church and was a trustee of the church at the time of his death.
Mr. Wiswell was elected to the office of county commissioner in 1900 and served in that capacity for three years. He was a man interested in all matters pertaining to the betterment of the city and his death will be a distinct loss to the community.
Arrangements for the funeral will be announced later.
