Penelope SACKETT and Asaph DEWEY were married on 16 Mar 1783 in Pittsfield, Berkshire, MA.32 Asaph DEWEY (son of David DEWEY and Rebecca PHELPS) was born on 2 Feb 1758 in Westfield, Hampden Co., MA.32 He died on 17 Jan 1833 in Richmond, Berkshire, MA.58 He was buried in New Lenox Cemetery, North Lenox, MA.59 He was the 3rd child of 6, 3rd son of 4 (page 744, #6503, DeweyGenealogy). He was baptized in Westfield May 7, 1758. He lived inHancock and Richmond, MA, and died at age 75.

He was a Revolutionary soldier. He served under Capt. Gray for 5 monthsin 1776.

He lived in Hancock and Richmond, Berkshire Co., MA.

An amusing story is told of the first ride the elder Asaph Dewey had inthe steam cars. His journey from Richmond, MA, to Albany, NY, was byhorseback or stage coach and was uneventful. Upon arriving in Albany, heboarded a car bound for Schenectady and had hardly recovered from thenovelty of the ride when suddenly the train stopped and he and the otherpassengers were unceremoniously ordered to "get out and help push the carup the grade." All of the passengers except Asaph Dewey meeklysubmitted to the imperious command; and no doubt he enjoyed hugely thegrimaces of his fellow travellers as they pushed the car along. Ridingin the cars was probably too slow for Asaph, and he returned home by wayof the canal (Dewey Genealogy).

The alternative wedding date is November 16, 1782. The one quoted isfrom The Corwin Collection, Vol. 3, CD (NEHGS).
