Moved to Iowa in the 1850s and returned to PA where Sarah married Charles in 1864. Some months after marriage, they travelled to Wisconsin, evidently looking for land to homestead. They returned to PA after Alfred was born where six additional children were born. In 1879, Charles and six children headed west by covered wagon to settle in northern Kansas (children ranged from 3 to 15 in age). Sarah and Winifred stayed behind and went by train to Kansas in 1880. The family evidently homesteaded and farmed for some years, and must have suffered severe hardship in their early days there. At one point Sarah even made the children's shoes. Nonetheless, she found time to paint in oil, which she did into her 70s. She also found time to serve as a local correspondent for one of the Topeka Kansas daily papers. The family moved to Seneca later.
