The State Sanatorium at Wales, also known as Statesan was the only state run tuberculosis sanatorium in Wisconsin. It was in operation from the fall of 1907 until the fall of 1957 whereupon it was converted to a Juvenile Correctional Facility, with the Stated Department of Juvenile Corrections, known for years as the Wales School for Boys and presently called Ethan Allen School for Boys. The site of the old san is approximately 25 miles west of Milwaukee near the town of Wales in Waukesha County, about a half mile northwest of the intersection of highways 83 and 18 (at the end of Boys School Road off Hwy. 83). Many of the buildings from the Statesan are in use today.
