      Sam Sackett and His Diary
One of the graduates of the North Haven schools (though he was too young for the Academy) was Samuel A. Sackett (1824-1902). Sackett was born in North Haven and lived here most of his life. He converted an auger shop to a sawmill in 1852 and was listed as a carpenter in the 1900 census. Sackett was married in 1850 to Betsy Jacobs (1822-1864), whose first marriage to Solomon Blakeslee (1812-1877) had ended in divorce. (Solomon's great-grandfather, Abraham, was the brother of Ebenezer Blakeslee, one of the original settlers of North Haven.) After Betsy's death, Sackett married, in 1870, Delia Young Culver, the widow of Ammi Culver . Around this time, Sackett moved into the Culver house, still standing at 290 Quinnipiac Avenue.
From 1839 to 1854 Sackett kept a series of diaries. He recorded deaths in North Haven but concluded after his first year of diary keeping that recording births was "absurd and useless. ..for a person. ..whose calling is not of such a nature as to bring [him] within the sphere of those occurrences."5 Sackett also recorded incidental information about life in North Haven- the number of bricks manufactured in a given year , thoughts on abolition and temperance, information about Mormons, results of local elections, and comments on North Haven's appearance - all interspersed with a lot of questionable poetry -much of it sentimental. For example:
Ho, Muddy River, come think thou art great
And for thy just honors and glory await
You can water a garden, a laundress supply
For many years unless thou art dry.
      Sept. 16, 1851
Sackett's adolescent poetry aside, he left a detailed account of changes in North Haven during the 1840s and 1850s.
