CASTLE GROVE
Castle Grove, December 15.
A flash of the lightning, A break of the wave. Man passes from life to his rest in the grave. How forcibly the truthfulness of the above lines were brought to the people of this community by the death of Dayton Cunningham, which occurred at his home some time last Wednesday night. He retired in his usual health in the evening, only to be found clasped in the icy embrace of death when the morning dawned. It was a terrible blow for the family to bear, coming like a thunderbolt from a cloudless sky and with crushing force, again illustrating the frailty and uncertainty of human life. Mr. Cunningham had complained some of heart trouble but had been working right along. When he failed to respond to the usual call on Thursday morning, his little daughter, Alice, went to awaken him but returned to her mother saying that she could not wake papa up. Mrs. Cunningham then went to his room and found that his spirit had taken its flight. He had fallen asleep and passed away without a struggle. Dayton W. Cunningham was born August 19, 1865, in the house where he died on December 9, 1916. On May 30, 1889, he was united in marriage with Miss Bertha Crouch. Four daughters came to bless this union, but in 1896 the family circle was broken and the young wife and mother was taken away. In March, 1899. he was married to Miss Dora Gadmer. A son and two daughters were the fruits of this union. He is survived by the widow and six children. The children are Mrs.Myrtle Barnes, of Marcus, Mrs. Edith Bayles, of Boulder township, Mrs. Mazie Dunivan, of Cedar Rapids, and Clifford, Alice and Ruth at home.
His eldest daughter, Ethel, died two years ago. The deceased was a good citizen. He was honorable in all his dealings and an accommodating neighbor. He was unpretentious and his home was one where hospitality always abounded. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon and was largely attended. The services were held in the Lutheran church and were conducted by Rev. W. A. Montgomery, of Manchester. E. E. Reed, of Monticello, conducted the Masonic ceremonies, the deceased having been a member of the Monticello lodge, and a large delegation of the lodge members were present. The remains were laid to rest in the Prairie Hill cemetery, which is only a few rods from the spot that had been his earthly home during his life span of Fifty years. Those present at the funeral from a distance were Mrs. Myrtle Barnes, of Marcus, Mr. and Mrs. George Dunivan, of Cedar Rapids, Mr. Gadmer and two sisters of Cherokee, John Pierce, of Delhi, Earl Gillilan,of Hopkinton, Mr. Higgins, of Davenport, and Frank Hampton, of Cedar Rapids.
