Augustine was the son of Benjamin and Maria (Moore) Fish. He graduated from Princeton (then New Jersey) College in 1847. At this time an aspiring physician apprenticed himself to an established physician for practical experience and attended formal lectures at a medical school. Accordingly Augustus sudied medicine with Dr. George P. Wood, of Philadelphia and graduated from the medical department of University of Pennsylvania in 1851. He entered Blockley Hospital, Philadelphia, as a resident physician in 1851 and remained there until 1854. He was visiting physician to the Philadelphia Dispensary and Charity Hospital. He established a private practice in Philadelphia in 1854. According to the 1865 Philadelphia Directory his residence, and presumably his practice, was located at 1607 Vine Street. During the Civil War he was appointed Acting Assistant Surgeon in the Union Army, and attended the wounded soldiers who were brought to the Philadelphia Hospital. Philadelphia became a major hospital center for the treatment of the wounded. Eventually, there were almost 10,000 beds throughout the city. Sometime betwen 1850 and 1860 he married Sarah P. Cheeseman daughter of Rev. Lewis and Maria (McPherson) Cheeseman, of Philadelphia. He died at Cooperstown, NY, without issue. His wife Sarah was born in Rochester, NY 28 June 1832. She was alive, a resident of Philadelphia, on 2 Nov 1888 when she applied for a U.S. Passport. It is not known whether or not she ever remarried. Her date of death and place of burial are not known.
